Greetings...

Getting ready to assemble my thundering 447,,,

Maui is the end of the tech food chain, so I have zero chance of locating a tube of Loctite 574...

Any suggestions for a substitute???

At Napa I located an "anaerobic" gasket maker... Napa (Permatex) #765-1189.

Thanks,

Aloha,

Henry:

Here is a link to the spec sheet for Loctite 574..
http://www.loctite.sg/sea/content_data/93789_574EN.pdf

[/url]Just compare the specs of this product with Permatex 765-1189
I could not find that product on Permatex web site.

Have you checked with the shops that rent mopeds in Lahaina? They probably
know of a good substitute. McMaster Carr has it under part number
7568A43<http://www.mcmaster.com/#7568A43>

Henry,
Most likely it is a Europe only product. To find the best
substitute I suggest you call Permatex and get a hold of an
application engineer. That person will give you the story, but the
best thing is you will get a professional recomendation for available product.
I have done this for several Permatex products and have greaat
result. Get the contact info off their web site. Always very helpful.

Hi Henry,

Here are a few substitutes.
You are allowed to sub Loctite 518 Red or Loctite 5910 for Loctite 574 orange. These are also used to seal the gearbox on the Rotax 912. You can use Permatex "The Right Stuff" which is basically the same as Loctite 5910. These last two do a much better job and that is why you see people getting away from the others. They are both a heavy black paste that are used for sealing gearboxes and transmissions in high vibration areas. When put side by side you can't tell the difference. Loctite and Permatex are the same company now. Permatex "The Right Stuff" can be found at most automotive stores and comes in a small pressurized can i.e. a small whip cream can. This little bit will go a long ways. Clean both surfaces with a scotch brite pad and wipe with some lacquerer thinner or acetone. Smear a thin film on both surfaces and then put them together. Do not over apply this and goop it on. This is one place less is more. What ever little squishes out is ok in or out so long as it was a tiny bit and will go through the system, but not if you slather it on and have huge clumps floating around of any of these sealants it isn't good. I have never had a leak using Loctite 5910 or Permatex The Right Stuff.

A number of years ago I overhauled my 503. Iused loctite 515. I am sure
thats what the book said to use at that time. I do still have some and have
used it on many 2 cycle crank cases . Good stuff
I do remember when I puchased it I thought it was on the expensive side but
it has stood the test of time. If you wish I can see if 575 is available and
at what price.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the help... Don't know how I survived before I found the Matronics Lists...

Compared the various spec sheets and had my self convinced that the Napa "Anaerobic Gasket Maker, Napa Part #765-1189" Would do the trick.

Just got off the phone with the tech guys at Permatex (877-376-2839). They said... the Napa Anaerobic Gasket Maker, Napa Part #765-1189 is the replacement part for Loctite 574... Nuf said.

Roger... This for the engine of Jim Hefner's old (now my) Firefly.

Thanks again everyone.

Aloha Nui
