I haven't abandoned the 503 - yet I do have a 582. The 503 is on my Drifter, which I thought I would sell to buy a Talon. (The Talon is a 3rd generation Drifter - think Drifter on steroids, but not as pumped up as the AirCam.)

I bought a Talon with a 532. I have always heard negative things about the 532, so when I was offered a used greyhead 582 with to replace it, I jumped at the chance. I thought about putting my trusty 503 in the Talon, but it would have been slightly underpowered. And I've decided not to sell my Drifter, so I didn't want to cannibalize it.

I got a greyhead 582, and sent it to Lockwood for a complete makeover...new crank, pistons, etc. They also machined the case and put in a silicon seal in place of the steel one to ensure that if the O-ring fails there won't be any mixing of oil and water. (Just like in the bluehead 582s.)

I've got about 100 hrs. on the refurbished 582 and it's working very well...haven't had any problems at all so far.

I thought about flying my Drifter to Oshkosh - that's what I'd prefer to do, because the Drifter is more fun to fly than the Talon. (The Talon is "better" in almost every way - speed, stability, responsiveness, comfort, but because it has a windshield - not much, but it's there - you don't feel the wind at all and it's just not as much fun. ) I decided to take the Talon, though, because I'll be flying back with a fellow who's flying a Titan, and the Drifter's cruise of 60 mph vs. the Talon's cruise of 80-85 mph means he won't be waiting on me as much. He'll still be waiting (he cruises (at) 100-115 mph) but no where near as much.

I know that you have flown most everywhere in this country in your Drifter with the Rotax 503 and would be interested in knowing why you switched from your trusty Rotax 503 to the 582? With all of your flying experience, your reasons for the change and experiences with the Rotax 582 would be most interesting.

Certainly makes a lot of sense to me plus you now have two aircraft to play around with.

I wish you all the best on your journey to Oshkosh. I also hope to be able to follow your adventure on my computer (as with your 2009 trip to Sun-N-Fun) and look forward to reading an article about the whole endeavor.
