I've a question regarding oil cooler efficiency on a Kitfox with a 912S:
My Series 6/ 912S was built with the Skystar optional oil cooler. During the past two summers at temps over 95F I'd have to lower the nose after talk off/climb after about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes as oil temp reached 260F (red line 266F). At 100F (a rare occurance in NW Ohio) had to throttle back from 75% to 65% for the same reason.
Now that I'm flying on floats, I've begun to see the same thing at 75-80 degrees. I'm flying 12-15 mph slower (at the same rpm/manifold pressures) as anticipated with the extra drag. The water and cylinder head temps have remained well in the green with or without the floats. I saw temps consistant with prior years operations in the month prior to install of the floats two weeks ago.
Any advice is appreciated as I'm now concerned about warmer weather operation.

Fred,
I have a Series 6 powered by a 912S and haven't had excessively high oil
temperatures in hot weather. Have you calibrated your oil temperature
sensor against a standard or accurate gauge? Send me a picture of your
oil cooler inlet on the cowling. and the dimensions of the oil cooler.
I'll make a comparison with mine and send you a picture of my configuration.

John,
I calibrated it two years ago when it was installed (boiling water). Will get picks and measurements to you tomorrow.

I can't help with the oil temps Fred, but congrats on getting the floats in
the air. How's the teething process going?

Hi, Deke,
The plane/floats are flying well. The pilots doing better . A Kitfox on floats is as much fun as I've ever had flying. I'll get some pictures on the site once I get the trim painted- too busy flying now.

John,
The cooler measures 3"x6 1/2" by 2" deep. The inlet is 2"x6 1/2". I calibrated the sensor and cooler in a boiling water bath as I had no other sensor available. Have included the photos of the installation.
We're visiting our adult children in San Francisco this week-end so my internet access may be limited.
I hope you're flying well. We met about 4 years ago at Oshkosh and you were gratious enough to answer a lot of my installation questions. Thanks for your help now.

Fred,
Your e-mail included no pictures. I am not at the airport now, so I
cannot verify the measurements you provided, however, they look very
similar. Included are two pictures of my installation. In the second
picture the adjustable doors are not fully open. The prop is my old
PowerFin blades, before I installed the Proplink system that I still
use. If your installation is the same as mine, I cannot explain the
differences in performance. I calibrated my temperature sensors in
heated cooking oil through the entire range of the sensor using a good
reference thermometer. My initial sensor was bad at the high end, so I
replaced it.

Fred,
Another question on your cooling problem. What coolant do you use and
what concentration? What do you dilute it with? I use Havoline
Extended Life and dilute it 50/50 with distilled water

John,
I use Honda's 50-50 premixed antifreeze. I'am having no problems with my water temps.
I'm visiting my kids here in San Francisco, so if I don't get back to you until Tuesday, it's because I don't always have internet access.
