I'm getting close to purchasing an iPad2 for  inflight charts and plates.  Can I use Foreflight to track my path on the  charts using the built in GPS feature without subscribing to either 3G or  4G service?  If that won't work I'll get the blue tooth hook up for an  external GPS.

Yes, if you have a 3G version you do NOT have to activate it to use the GPS. My new iPad 2 Verizon 3G has never been activated and it works fine.  I always recommend to ONLY buy 3G versions, even though many people will never activate them.

Yes, if you buy the 3G version, the gps will work without the 3G activation.

Strange, I haven't seen the same thing. I leave the cellular data

OFF too.  I'm not sure why yours would do that.  I wonder if it's

something within the app you're running at the time?
