Hi all,

Today I had an email from the FAAsafety.gov site talking
about ADS-B availability in the KMSP area, which I've of
course noticed for quite some time. So I'm not sure if
it's finally "official" or what, but, it did give some info
and a pretty nice link to a gov't website on ADS-B, so I
thought I'd put it here for you to see.
Attached are a couple of coverage related screenshots...The
map that shows coverage zones shaded is pretty poor on
accuracy from what I've found, because I've had coverage
in lots of those areas that show no coverage. But, if
you compare it to the ground station map, you'll see that
some areas like Arizona and SoCal are filled with stations,
so there really is coverage there. Anyway, thought some
of you who routinely ask me coverage questions might like
to see this stuff.
Tim

ADS-B in the Minneapolis Area
Notice Number: NOTC2960

Attention All Pilots Flying in the Minneapolis En Route AirspaceNew
Traffic and Flight Information Services Are Available Now
Pilots who fly in the Minneapolis En Route Airspace (ZMP) can now
receive free traffic and weather information in the cockpit. To receive
these services, aircraft must be equipped with an Automatic Dependent
Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B) transmitter/receiver or transceiver and
a cockpit display of traffic information (CDTI).A map showing the
coverage area is available at: http://www.faa.gov/nextgen/flashmap/.
The new services include:

Flight Information Service - Broadcast (FIS-B), which provides pilots
and flight crews with a cockpit display of aviation weather and
aeronautical information via Universal Access Transceiver (UAT)
equipment on 978 MHz.Note:FIS-B is not compatible with 1090ES avionics.
·The following FIS-B weather products are for advisory use only. The
information provided by FIS-B can not be used in compliance of any
regulatory requirement.Pre-flight weather briefings and in-flight
weather updates must be obtained through FAA approved sources only.
oAviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs).
oSpecial Aviation Reports (SPECIs).
oTerminal Area Forecasts (TAFs) and their amendments.
oNEXRAD (regional and CONUS) precipitation maps.
oNotice to Airmen (NOTAM) Distant and FlightDataCenter.
oAirmen’s Meteorological Conditions (AIRMET).
oSignificant Meteorological Conditions (SIGMET) and Convective SIGMET.
oStatus of Special Use Airspace (SUA).
oTemporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs).
oWinds and Temperatures Aloft.
oPilot Reports (PIREPS).
oTIS-B service status.
Traffic Information Service - Broadcast (TIS-B),which enhances a pilot's
visual acquisition of other traffic on 978 UAT and 1090 MHz Extended
Squitter (1090 ES).
·TIS-B is an advisory only service.Pilots must continue to exercise
vigilance to “see and avoid” other aircraft in accordance with Title 14
of the Code of Federal Regulations Section 91.113b.
The following table lists which type of data link is required to receive
TIS-B and FIS-B services:

If the aircraft is equipped with the following data link…
Then the pilot can receive the following services…
978 MHz Universal Access Transceiver (UAT)
TIS-B and FIS-B
1090 MHz Extended Squitter (1090 ES)
TIS-B

The FAA encourages users of TIS-B and FIS-B to report any irregularities
observed while using the services. Reports should contain the following
information:
1.Time of observation.
2.Location.
3.Type and identity of the aircraft.
4.Description of the condition observed.
5.Type of avionics system and software version used.

You can report issues by contacting the nearest Flight Service Station
(FSS) facility or by submitting FAA Form 8470-5, Safety Improvement
Report, available from FSSs, Flight Standards District Offices, or
general aviation fixed-based operators.
Additional information about ADS-B services can be found in the
Aeronautical Information Manual at the following link:

Thanks Tim.

I love the disclaimer. Apparently FAA weather (METARs and TAFs) obtained thru an FAA source (ADS-B) cannot be used to satisfy FAA regulatory requirements!

I can hear all the conversations with FSS/ Flight Watch now: "Well, we've got the Notam and TAF for our destination, but it doesn't count and we need to hear it from you" (!)

Nah, the source is the FAA approved source....but I bet they're worried about how up to date your data is, because ground level coverage will be poor, so much of the data wouldn't be available until airborne for many people, and won't be available airborne until you're high enough, in other areas, sometimes as high as 5000-18000ft.
That's the problem with ground based weather, and why I feel for the dedicated traveler, satellite based WX is always the better choice.
These days though, for every bit of data, everyone is all "CYA" and put disclaimers on everything.
