Hi all, Looking for input from anyone that may used a Heli-coil, Time-sert, or other thread insert system to repair a spark plug hole/threads in a 912. I have some damaged threads in the bottom hole on my #2 cylinder and I am not sure if it is going to seal up or not at this point, and I am considering my options. If anyone has successfully used a product, I would appreciate knowing which product , part no., where you purchased etc. Thanks, Paul Perry (Bloomfield, MO)

I have used helicoil's many times as a motor engineer and found them the best solution
to repair a stripped thread, But first i would run a thread chaser through just in case its a bit of hard carbon stopping the plug from fully seating,
regards

Thanks for the reply, Ivor. I had tried to fix some damaged threads and looks like a made it worse. I was hoping to get a reply from someone that had used a specific product on a 912 engine. I have looked at some of the products available and am concerned that the "inserts" are not long enough. I haven't measured length of the DCPR7E threads yet, but they look to be a lot longer than the 15-18mm lengths of inserts that seem to be standard with the helicoil and timesert products. The mechanic helping me has used helicoil products in the past (not on a 912) and wanted me to try to get some input from someone that has. Again, if anyone has used a specific product on a 912, I would very much appreciate any info you could provide. Feel free to send me a PM or e-mail if you would rather not post. Thanks, Paul Perry (pperryrph(at)sbcglobal.net)

Hi.
Re spark plug thread repair, helecoils are prone to unwind with regular use,.
But more important is heat transfer, so to prevent the nose of your spark plug
melting or the insulator cracking up and dropping in to your cylinder you need
to do a repair that transfers heat at the same rate as head material, look for
spark plug thread specific repairs, solid not wound, that will carry away excess
heat (think thet were bress or bronze and machined then secured with a peg or
set screw) , they are out there, can not remember brand names.
Personaly I would sugest replacing the head, as the most reliable repair. (much
cheaper than risking breaking your pride and joy and a large rise in
insurance).
Based on the need to remove the head to clean out swarf ,labour/time rqd etc.
do it once do it right.
Regards
Kevin
