Hi Ron,
Beautiful plane you have there. Regarding flight advice, here's my recommendations. Do a lot of taxiing. Not only to learn how to taxi, but to become familiar with your proximity to the ground. This will help you judge your landing, because you have to get the Kolb really close to the ground before the flare. Also, as most experienced Kolb pilots will tell you, approach your landings with power, about 3500 RPM, to prevent stalling during the flair. You must keep it flying until you are really close to the ground. No 10 or 15 foot flairs in a Kolb. Because of the light weight and drag of the Kolbs, they lose momentum quickly and if you are too high when it stalls, you will drop in hard and bend your landing gear legs, or worse. Homer Kolb wrote in the original FireStar builders manual a section on how to fly it. He said to do crow hops. I know a lot of pilots on this list disagree, but I did it his way and it worked good for me. Hold the stick all the way back to prevent the thrust from pushing the Kolb over onto it's nose. Slowly add throttle and at about 3000+ RPM it will lift off in ground effect, then you immediately reduce the throttle some, let the stick go forward slightly and it will settle back down onto the ground. Just don't let it get too high. Although I had 42 hours of flight time before flying my Kolb, I hadn't flown for more than 27 years. I got an hour of time in an Aeronca Champ before trying the Kolb. Your low time means you need to be very cautious. Good luck.

Ron, Looks like a nice little plane, I hope you have many happy hours flying her.Not to be the turd in the punch bowl, but your Firestar most likely is not a legal ultralight, they're too heavy.
It probably won't ever cause you a problem, but just in case, don't have the number one dead giveaway, make sure you don't have a fuel tank bigger than 5 gallons. That's the legal limit and except for a second seat, it's the one thing that someone can walk up and see that your aircraft doesn't qualify.

List,
I've never seen this discussed here before so I have a question about
the max 5 gallon tank. Is there any rule against carrying jugs of
gas/oil mixture in a compartment behind the 5 gallon tank in use? When
I fly beyond my 5 gallon return point I carry up to three jugs of mix
and land to pour them into my five gallon tank. I can't see the
difference between carrying bottles of two cycle oil and mixing with
available gas and carrying jugs of already mixed. Any thoughts or
experiences?

Dave- Going by memory, the discussion came to the conclusion that non-functioning cans of gas counted as freight. I think you are OK. Might have to check the archives. It's one of those funny things, like they care about the unloaded weight and not the gross weight.

The rules specify a fuel capacity not exceeding 5 gallons to qualify as an ultralight. Many have interpreted this to mean that carrying an extra can is, if not within the intent of the rules, at least within the letter. However, like so many things, it would probably come down to the mood or attitude of the FAA guy who's enforcing the rules.

Ron, The FAA has a publication you might want to look at. Advisory Circular 103-7 (AC 103-7) "The Ultralight Vehicle" explains the ins and outs of determining if your aircraft qualifies (or at least let you know what "the man" will look for). You can download it here: http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/advisory_circulars/index.cfm/go/document.information/documentID/22640
There's also AC 103-6 "Ultralight Vehicle Operations, Airports, ATC, and Weather"
http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/advisory_circulars/index.cfm/go/document.information/documentID/22639
Both are free.
Good luck and safe flying.

Re. amount of fuel carried.
We don`t have that problem here. We work on MTOW so if you are a little guy
you can carry more juice.
In any case there is no problem carrying extra fuel provided you cannot
acces it while in flight.
Cheers

Thanks again Rick.I read both of these a couple of months ago.I did some research into part 103 enforcement awhile back.I talked to a bunch of different EAA chapter members and i have yet to find even ONE single seat "vehicle" that has even been ramp checked, let alone ticketed for anything.A FAA investigator at our local airport looking into a nose wheel collapsee when asked about the subject said "We don't bother single seat "vehicles"." He went as far to say he didnt think there had EVER been a citation written to a single seat "vehicle" for being overwieght.
Then to top it off,Quicksilver which was heavy on the minds of the FAA when 103 was drafted, will tell you that NONE of there "vehicles will wieght under the 254 limit.I was told a stock 447 powered mx wieghs 270 with NO brakes,no instruments ect.
I found out that the vast majority of part 103 "vehicles" miss 103 specs by a little some where.
Thanks again for the insight thou.

Following this discussion with interest and have wondered if your insurance carrier might want to know if you're flying "illegally", i.e. flying as a Part 103 but not meeting the requirements. Weight, speed, fuel cap, etc. Could they not refuse claims if not within the rules?

Hmmm. Well, consider that most ultralight insurance claims are
probably for accidents during ground operations, and it's not illegal
to _taxi_ an overweight ultralight, only to _fly_ it...
