Michel,
Are you aware of the Jim Burkholder accident in a 601 with the Franklin?

HI Jeff,

<< Are you aware of the Jim Burkholder accident in a 601 with the Franklin?>>

Without additional information that seems a little like "bomb" throwing. I can’t think of a single engine that has not had a failure. Was there something about the Franklin incident that would lead you to believe it was a fundamental design flaw? If so, please share with the list so we all can learn from it.

No I'm not, but I would certainly like getting more details.    One of my friend
flew for years with that type of engine and found it very smooth a very little
maintenance.  He did a top overhaul after 800 hours.   Please share what you
know about this accident.

As I said before and wrote on my web page, my only regret with my plane was not
installing an aircraft engine in the first place. The Subaru appears to be very
resistant to catastrophic failures (I had a friend that lost all the coolant;
the engine was not damaged... another friend broke his crank shaft and he was
able to fly another 5 minutes and get to the runway. I had a valve and valve
spring broken and I could not even notice it while flying --- I noticed lack of
compression on a cylinder during the next preflight). But this being said, it
(the Soob) requires a LOT of maintenance. Mostly valve related maintenance and
reduction drive maintenance.
Last summer, I felt my engine was less powerful and on my last flight, I noticed
a vibration that I did not like... I decided to land at a nearby airport and
concentrate on my Franklin install thereafter.

I don't think much of any automobile engine in an aircraft anymore. It is not
even much cheaper (I put more than 14 k$ in my Soob install including all the
remake I had to do... selling price is NOT based on cost Smile ).  The Franlkin
project will cost me around 20 to 23 k$ including everything that does around
the engine (that started with a 7 k$ bare new engine).

Michel,
I'll do some digging on it. Jim was a local (Washington, DC) builder that I became friends with years ago. He retired and moved to Florida. About a 2-3 years ago he crashed - engine failure as I remember - hit a tree and burned. His passenger died on the scene and I believe Jim died from his burns a year later or so. Jim always told me that he was never sure that the Franklin was the best idea he had had. There was a Franklin distributor in Winchester, VA at the time but I believe that they are gone now. I will find the NTSB report for you.

Steve,
I am sorry that you took it that way. Jim was a friend of mine so it hit home. I'll dig out the NTSB report. Jim was a member of this list too so his old posts are in the archives. Am I the only one to remember him?

Hi Jeff,

I am truly sorry for the loss of your friend.

I was not offended by your comment I just thought it lacked substance on a very volatile topic.

I was off the list for several years for many long and boring reasons but I am actively building again.

I also had a Subaru conversion on the first plane I built to 95% completion. I sold that plane to a flying club in Australia where it is flying today. However, they had an engine out over the Bush due to a cooling system failure. It was later determined this was a design flaw and nothing to do with my installation. Thank G-d pilot and passenger walked away from this unscathed after a forced landing.

I am planning on installing a Corvair in my 650 project built by William Wynne. I never thought I would consider another auto conversion but after speaking to William he allayed many of my fears with a very frank (and inspired) recitation of the facts.

The NTSB report is available at

Unfortunately, there is not much positive or negative about the Franklin engine. I just remember that Jim was not totally thrilled with it.

Hello group!

I saw no interest for my engine yet... the whole thing for 1500$ (picked up at my home). If I don't have a buyer in the next couple of weeks, I'll sell the stuff at a metal recycling facility on a per pound basis.
