I have finally started sealing up my wings, well the first one anyway, for the installation of the new wing tanks and I am once again reading the Polyfiber manual in preparation of re-covering one bay on each wing and painting to match. I purchased what is an exorbitant amount of Poly-brush, Poly-tone, and Poly-spray a while back for this small (area wise) project and now I am looking at all the things that the PF manual is telling me I need. For surface prep of two wing bays, now coated in plywood and a fiberglass cowl I am looking at almost $200 in chemicals since they all come in quart sizes when I only need ounces.

The manual does not need to be followed to the letter for our aircraft but it is obviously the smart thing to do, but I just cant justify all these chemicals. Has anyone devised good substitutes for any of this stuff or omitted it all together? I am looking at PF C-2200 paint cleaning solvent, PF EV-400 epoxy varnish with E-500 reducer for the wood, and UV Smooth prime and EP-420 Epoxy primer.

Like I said this is ridiculous. I know it will make a durable finish but it is hard to spend significantly more then the tanks cost ($400ish) to install them. Any ideas?

Hey James unless you are going to paint the wood with epoxy you do not need
the epoxy materials, spar varnish will work fine, they have been using that
on the inside of wings for the last 70 + years, cleans up easy, and you can
find it at a good hardware store or boat store. 3 coats will work and a
coat of fuel proof from a model airplane store to go on top of varnish or
not? , Did your tanks come with a leak check? If you do decide to leak check
them your self, Be sure you use a very small amount of pressure, remember
the surface area X PSI. use less than a 1/4 PSI. just filling with water and
leaving the cap off will give you enough for a leak check. Or use a small
balloon on the outlet to determine a very small amount of air pressure. then
spray with soapy water and look for the bubbles. Bob

my only experience subbing is the varnish. i tried at least 3 or 4 poly clear coats and they all softened with mek. i guess that maybe the glue would dry before they softened but i didn't chance it. i did coat areas that didn't come in contact with polytak with poly varnish and it worked fine. areas that did i gave a final coat of the epoxy.
i checked on marine epoxy varnish and no cheaper than poly.
