I'm checking out a 30 trial offer of Mobile HD from Foreflight on my iPad2 and I have a problem that might prevent me from going paperless for VFR flights. I can't access the sectional chart info that is printed on the borders - MOA floor/ceiling hours of operation and all that valuable stuff. Are you paid subscribers able to see that info while flying? How about orientation of the inflight moving map for either VFR of enroute IFR (low)? Can you select "track up" instead of "north up"? I can't find a way to do that on my iPad2 and I aways fly the Garmin with "track up". Thank you for any help might be able to give.

You should send those questions to team(at)foreflight.com
They respond very quickly, and if nothing else, it gives them
yet another voice telling them what people want. If you don't,
it does nothing to help them with product improvement.
That said, I don't know the answer to the track-up/North-Up
question...I prefer North-Up when reading charts, but
Track-Up on an MFD, and I'm flexible either way. I think
there is value in having more than one method in the cockpit,
as it's much easier to deal with charts in a north-up
mode some of the time...but I agree that track-up is
better on a GPS that isn't displaying a whole chart. Remember
that these are raster charts, and if you did Track-Up,
all the wording on the chart could be upside down, while
you're track is going South. For Vector charts, like what
is available on WingX, it may not be so critical. But,
I see no real value in Track-Up on a VFR Sectional or
IFR Enroute if the chart is a raster chart.

Regarding the other data on the chart, When you tap inside
the MOA, you can get basic floor/ceiling info, but I don't
see that they have contact info using that method. You may
want to check and see if they added that yet.

Now, on WingX, which I prefer for in-flight use, you can
tap a MOA and it gives you all the MOA information you're
looking for.

So far for in-flight, I think Foreflight isn't up to the
same level as WingX. For anything on the ground or
pre-flight, foreflight is the best. I'd consider using
WingX, or if flying IFR, maybe WingX with the georeferenced
plates, but then getting Foreflight, NOT the pro version,
for an iPad/iPhone combo for filing flight plans and
preflight planning. The way it is today, the 2 packages
have a duplication of capabilities, but they complement
eachother nicely if you use them that way. The one feature
WingX presently is lacking is the "zoom to TAC" feature over
class Bravo areas. Foreflight can zoom in and switch to
TAC mode an you can see VFR corridors and such. So it's
the only in-flight use I have for Foreflight right now,
with WingX being the better tool in that environment.

Tim had mentioned that with Foreflight he didn't see the contact info.

Regarding the other data on the chart, When you tap inside
the MOA, you can get basic floor/ceiling info, but I don't
see that they have contact info using that method. You may
want to check and see if they added that yet.

You can get contact info. When you tap on MOA an info box comes up showing operating ceilings of the MOA and hours of operation. Make sure at the bottom of that box that ALL is selected. You'll notice an > to the right side of the MOA info box, press on that > and you will get the contact frequencies.

One other feature that is nice that you may not be using is the plates feature. I frequently do IFR practice for currency and use this feature. It allows you to store the plates you think you will be needing and then when your ready to shot your approach you can access it very quickly without having to enter anything. Saves time when you start the actual approach.

The scratch pad is also nice for writing down your clearance when given. Otherwise I always seem to leave something out on read back.

I agree with Tim on the Track UP issue as far as reading the info on the chart.
