Hi guys,

I am installing the Jaguar Cowl and need help figuring my paint codes. Please take a look at the attached picture. The tag on the firewall says "Finish and Trim 8-EPHM-29-P". I searched GG archives and among other useful things I found this list of the original paint codes:
http://grumman.net/archive/2009/msg07222.html
The white paint apparently is Polyurethane Imron 817U, but what are the 2 shades of blue I have on top?

Also, both shades of blue are still nice and shiny after 34 years, but the white is chalking and in bad shape. Why is it so? Is it because the blue is not a polyurethane paint but enamel or lacquer and it was baked on? Later I also want to re-paint the wings so I wonder if I can prevent the paint from chalking after a while.

Here are 7 blue codes I found in the GG codes list:

Grumman # Name Vendor part #
---------------------------------------------------------
Polyurethane:
-------------
APS-1154-228 Patriot Blue DuPont 6544U
Camouflage Blue DuPont 95605U

Acrylic Enamel?
-------------
APS-1154-301 Bright Blue Metallic DuPont 5574A
APS-1154-306 Regal Blue DuPont 5543A
APS-1154-307 Grabber Blue DuPont 5205A

Laquer?
------------
APS-1154-102 Riviera Blue Ditzler Randolph "X" DDL 13830
APS-1154-128 Patriot Blue Randolph H-9170-R
Thank you,
-Boris

Hi Boris,
If the white is still the original 817U, it will buff out nicely. Odds are, if the blue is still shiny, it's been repainted.
The colors on the 70's era Grummans are RM Centauri Acrylic Enamel. It's not baked on.
Also, the colors are not custom colors. The orange, for example, is the orange from a 73 Volkswagon. The metallic brown is from a Dodge or Plymouth of around the same year. I'm sure if you take your ELT cover to an automotive paint store and try to match paint colors from 73 on, you'll find yours.
Also, DuPont has totally revised the paint codes for paint sold in California. So, the numbers may not match up. Most paint stores have the old codes though.
So, tell us, how's the installation going? How many shims on the engine mounts did you need?
Gary
