Heat shields - carbs

After installing the Skydrive carb heat kit, I had to cut the back of my former standard Rotax fuel/heat shield cups to cope with the extra lenght.

As their function is now only partial (half of the carb bowls unprotected), I purchased the fuel recuperation plates that normally come with the standard Rotax airbox, thinking I could adapt these (912S installation).

I am anyway concerned about how this could be done in a proper way.

Has someone already solved this?

Thanks in advance.

Jean-Paul,

Attached are five photos of my carb heats shields (912 ULS), which I hope will say more than a thousand words.

The shield is made of thin stainless steel plate. The support is one continous strip cut from a stainless steel plate, riveted to the shield. The zig-zag shape makes the support sufficiently stiff against vibrations.

You will see that the aft, lower fixation of the shield support is the screw clamp that holds the exhaust temp thermocouple in place, while the forward, upper fixation is a standard stainless steel screw hose clamp. Both are tightened "just so" - no point tightening hard. If you do not have these thermocouples installed, use hose clamps.

Good luck.

Regards,
Svein

I have the carb heat system also - I made my own shields after cutting out the stock ones and losing the drainage effect - took a lot of time cutting and fitting - but does provide a heat shield and complete coverage of the carb for leaks - ran a tube down the back for dainage of fuel if it should leak - can send pictures if you wish -

Gary, I'm sure I and others would be interested to see any pics you can post
re your fuel heat shields. I don't like the thought of 100LL or mogas
dripping down onto that silencer(muffler?) and will fit suitable protection
when time allows.

Here are some pictures showing my heat shield cup installation. I used loop-type cushioned aluminum alloy clamps (WDG) to fasten the cups to the engine mount. To do this I had to build small aluminum brackets. To the one on the left side carb a rather thick piece of aluminum is bolted between the bracket and the clamp because the carb on the left side is further backward. See the attached pictures. More details can be provided on request.

Folks,

Many thanks for your quick answers.
Alfred's design seems to perfectly match my current expectations as I have the trays already, while Svein gives an interesting alternative.

I will be back to the hangar this weekend to think further about all that.

Have good and safe flights !
