Hi guys,
I have a very slowly developing leak at the upper coolant elbow on my #1 cyl on my 912uls. I've attached a picture of it (if the attachment goes through that is). It's a very very slow ooze out of where the elbow comes out of the flange. It's dry at the seam where the flange contacts the head.
There are no droplets or collections of fluid after a flight (yet), so it doesn't look like something I'll need to service immediately. But I do want to put it on the plate.
My question is, I've never serviced one of these - what's the right way to do it? I didn't see anything in the heavy maint. manual about this. According to the parts diagram it looks like the elbow screws into the head and there's a rubber O-ring. Should I just replace the ring or is the elbow user-serviceable? I.e. unscrew it out and reapply whatever loctite it is they recommend?

It's not the "O" ring. It is leaking around the threads. You should be able to re-use the "O" ring.
Take off the fitting. Take a heat gun and warm up the part and unscrew it out of the base. Clean the threads with some lacquer thinner. Apply some Loctite 648 retaining compound to the threads and re-assemble everything. Let it sit overnight.

Ok, thanks Roger. Sounds pretty straightforward, tho I'll have to get the loctite from somewhere.
Is this a common problem with the 912 just out of curiosity and if so how bad is it?

Hi Roger,
Is it just my imagination, or does it look like I'll have to take the intake manifold loose to unscrew the elbow? Seems like it'll hit the manifold while unscrewing it.
Guess it's not a huge deal since it's only 4 bolts, but just want to confirm I'll have to do that?

Hi Lucien,
Just drain a little coolant down below this level, pull back the clamp and hose. Then unscrew the 2 screws that hold it down. It is far easier to remove it than mess with everything else. You will need to place it in a vice because you need to heat it with a heat gun to unscrew it. It does get hot. Clean the threads with a soft wire brush and lacquer thinner. Apply the Loctite 648. Put the completed fitting on with the screws right away and turn the nipple in the direction you want it. It is better to let it sit over night, but a gentle heat from the heat gun for a few minutes speeds that up quite fast and you can top the coolant back off again in an hour or so.

Ah, I see. it threads only into the flange.... I thought it screwed into the head itself... whew  . took a closer look at my parts catalogue and now I see how it's put together. RogerWilco - once I get the loctite I'll pull the whole thing off and service it the way you say.
