I have the opportunity to move my 601 project out to the local FBO
hanger and I'm wondering about insurance. I've talked to my
home-owner's and commercial insurance provider and they have offered
to add a rider to my commercial policy. The home-owner's policy won't touch it.
I'm wondering what other's are doing.
It was something of a shock to discover that with my project at home
in the garage, it wasn't covered by the home-owner's policy. It is
just an assembly of aluminum that might be an airplane someday....

Hi Steve,
I've tried a couple of different aviation insurance brokers. First I
bought a policy (on a leased S-LSA) from the EAA "Blessed" broker -
Falcon insurance. The results were so horrible I changed to Regal
insurance in Hillsboro, OR. Falcon in TX uses a production line
organization so that different employees sell and service policies while
Regal uses a more normal insurance broker arrangement where your broker
does all customer contact with a given customer.
There are a number of aviation specialty insurance brokers in the
country. I'm sure you can find them by searching the internet or
aviation publications. Avemco is also available, but they sell direct
rather than using brokers. That means you don't have a broker to
intercede between you and the insurance company if there is a problem.
Regal managed to find me an insurance company that would write insurance
for me without any time in type in the Zodiac XL. That is what I asked
for since there are few such planes available to get time. This might
not work for anybody else though since I had 80 hours in a similar model
(Tecnam Echo Super) in the last 2 years.

This is just all the parts and assemblies, not an airplane yet. I
want some kind of coverage in case a storm drops the hanger on it or
somebody drives a fork lift over it.

You can get that kind of coverage. I think it is called "Not in motion"
or "Hull" insurance.

I have my project insured with AVEMCO. They have been very good about it. You state the value and they quote a price based on the fact that its not yet flying. I hope that since I have a history with them that might help with getting it insured once its time to fly. Falcon and AOPA are brokers, not actual insurance companies, like AVEMCO or Allstate, for example.
My homeowners (State Farm) is very clear that they want nothing to do with aircraft or even aircraft parts.

Same with me- Allstate wants nothing to do with either aircraft or
car projects. Contacted EAA- they recommended talking to Falcon. If you
try someone else like AVEMCO, post the results so we can have an on-list
comparison.
