Hello everybody.
I wish to improve my radio ,Icom IC-A200, performance.
Practically the range is very limited and I have a lot of noise in trasmission.
The reception is good, strong and without noise on all frequencies.
The whole radio system seems to be correct, radio,connectors...
The problem arises with the antenna. The antenna, a whip model, is on the belly with a ground panel inside the fuselage.
The problem, I believe, is here.
So, I ask, which kind of antenna did you install and the results obtained.
At the moment I haven't any Residual wave measurements so I cannot answer to the request.
Thank-you
Luigi

Luigi
I also have an Esqual, I also tried the antenna under side mount with a copper plate, another on top, another in the mid aft . I tried it all. Let me tell you what worked for me, do with it what you may.
1- get a good radio, I have had a Garmin SL 40 for about 5 years now
2-Get that antenna mounted as far away from the engine as possible
3-Mount the antenna as verticle as possible- I use an advanced aircraft eletronics antenna that I mounted on the horizontal stabilizer. take off the rudder and epoxy the antenna to the rear inside flange of the stabilizer.
I can talk clear to any airport within 150 miles . Even if you keep your radio, mount the antenna like I did and I know you will be happy

usually an antenna system which receives normally will also transmit normally I suggest you check transmitter modulation.low modulation gives short range and scratchy sound, over modulation gives distortion and many other problems: lGood luck Lowell Ridge lightning kit # 10310uigi di napoli (elledien(at)yahoo.com)

Dave thank-you for the info.
I need more info about the mounting position.
You say to install it as verticle as possibile. Do you mean in the vertical fin or in the horizontal stabilizer? I suppose in the vertical fin.
The antenna you suggest is the Advanced Electronic 5T ?
Thanks again.
Best regards
Luigi

Luigi,

My opinion does not count 100% , since I haven`t tried my radio  with   engine running so far.
But I have contacted  the tower of the airfield I usually fly off ( EDFL, about 10km away ) from my ground floor workshop, with a steel concrete ceiling above me and brick walls around.
Flap and trim motors made no disturbance.
I use a german  Filser/Funkwerk 833a COM with a Funkwerk antenna that has been developed especially for the composite gliders ( and powered gliders) that we have so many here in Germany.
It consists of a 65cm wire part and has a short connection cable with a standart plug. I also bought a 5m (thats roughly 15ft for you non-metricals) extension cable and followed the recommendation of the Knowing  ( and Dave`s, but I didn`t know of him at that time Wink )  and epoxied it to the aft side of the vertical stab`s bulkhead. There is no need for any alu or copper "counterweights".
The antenna was about 40 Euro + tax.
I don`t think you have to buy a new radio. From what I heard the ICOM radios are ok.

If you´re interested, just mail me  and I will tell you where you can buy the stuff in Germany, in case they don`t sell it in Italy.

Which airfield in  Italy do you fly from?

Hope this helps!

Gerd

Thank you Gerd for your mail with interesting infos.
I leave nearby Rome, 40 km south-east, and the field is Artena.
I tried to find on the web but, right now I found only the extension cable for Funwerk.
I really appreciate if you may tell me where to buy this antenna.
Best regards
Luigi
