I just heard that the company supplying Rotax with the new fuel pumps just back ordered them. That means they could still be a month away. It's a wait and see.

So does this new fuel pump mean the old one isn't broke, but they fixed it anyway Wink

Rotax has a history of incremental engineering improvements in
their engine lines.

I believe this preferable to the frozen in stone, nearly ossified
Lycosaurus clan.

I hear Lockwood received the new fuel pumps. I think CPS should have theirs this week too.

I see no present reason to replace the original fuel pump with the 'new'
unit. Should I await some problem before doing something, or should I go
ahead and replace it before problems (if any) arise?

Unless there is a notice from the factory that replacement must
be done immediately, or in the next X flight hours, there is no
requirement to replace an updated part.

I wouldn't bother with a new pump unless my old one went bad.

Not to worry. When my old fuel pump went bad, fuel just dripped on my
hot exhaust. No problem. I just flew lower so I could land before I
burned up ;>)

Fuel Pumps good or bad---- While on our annual trip to Pittsburgh from
Florida last weekproble in the S7S while checking the plane at FWQ I
noticed a fuel stain on the front of engine. Next I felt the fuel pump
and it was wet and dripping and I then turned on the electric fuel
pump and the fuel just about poured out of the eng fuel pump. Due to
the location of the fuel pump I consider this a very serious problem.
I was able to get a new pump from Lockwood over nighted and we
continued the trip. My plane has 850 hrs on it and the pump had about
650hrs as the original was replaced by a SB under warranty.

Roger, with the location of the pump I'm not with you on this one.

Hi Ollie,

I'm not sure what you mean by location?
If your fuel pump leaks or the diaphragm goes bad by all means change it, but I don't see a reason to toss a pump in good working order out to just install another pump, which as of right now is unproven just like the last pump was for the first year.

This may be true, but I just changed mine on a trip because I noticed
a fuel stain on front of engine and when I turned on the electric pump
fuel just about poured out of the eng. fuel pump. Now the problem I
see with this is the fuel pump sets right over the exhaust and being
on the front of the engine leaking fuel can blow back over the hot
engine.

Rotax made two visible design changes with this new pump.

(1) it's now "bolted together" instead of being pressed together. Apparently, there were failures at the crimp, where the two halves of the pump were crimped together.

(2) Instead of a weep hole (or whatever its called), they now have a regular fitting on the pump, where a "drain line" is connected. This is to allow raw fuel to be drained away from hot parts of the engine.

But I agree with the pump location. Its awful hard to avoid hitting the cylinders, or the hot muffler underneath the engine, should raw fuel come out of it, even with the new drain line. I suppose one could get fancy and route the new drain line away from all those areas.

When my pump failed, it dripped fuel on the exhaust. Roger told me it
was a failing fuel pump. Could be, that's why the older pump was
changed. I would consider running the engine, shut it down and check
for fuel pump leaks before each flight.
