Yup, went on for over an hour in Sun Lakes, deposited about 1/8" of
fresh soil on the patio. Vis was definitely less than 100 ft most of
the time with a few periods down around 10-20 ft. Not looking forward
to cleaning hangar in the morning with whatever blew through the poor
seals and deposited on the project.

Interestingly, we never saw this in the Anthem area on the N edge of Phoenix. Some fog about 10 PM though, when the first rain hit the hot houses and pavement, then heavy rain. Ain't nature wonderful when viewed from the ground?John Ackerman

So is that the definition of "Hard IFR" whereas the easy stuff
is just being in the clouds?

I suppose so, when you consider those dust clouds will have similar
but not quite as bad effect on your paint, windows and engine as a
volcanic ash cloud. Phx Sky Harbor was closed for over an hour.

So that's what you fly into with Synthetic vision, as
a preparation for a new paint job and windshield...it
does the surface prep and windshield removal for you.

I recall landing Palm Springs for a quick overnight turnaround. Beautiful
weather, crystal clear skies so I ALMOST didn't put my full length cover
on the Turbo Lance II. I said to myself don't be so lazy and pulled out
the cover. A horrific sand storm passed through the area delaying my
departure by ~4 days. When I arrived at the tie down there was a layer of
dust & crap covering every inch of the exterior even on the underside of
the wings & belly. Removing the cover really demonstrated what damage
could have been done to the glass. The plane looked like the ultimate
Farmers Tan with the cover off.
The main lesson I learned from this is... Don't be lazy.

So is this the outflow from a big storm?
Looks like the ones I've seen in TX and NM back in my glider days... at
first I turned and ran but realized other racers were riding them....
nothing like it! No fun on the ground though, especially for a big city.

Usually it is the leading edge of a big storm, yes, outflow. Storms
often roll in off the mountains down from 7000 ft to 1000 ft
elevation, so a lot of energy is incorporated. Yesterday's storm had
50-70mph winds for over an hour, and that picks up a lot of dirt from
the desert.

FWIW, having flown out in front of these before, the clear air ahead of
it is smooth and going up at a rapid rate. Think of a cold wedge of air
smoothly lifting up the the air in front of it. The air behind the dust
front has the high winds at the surface kicking up the dust, and is also
lifting - but here the rising air is convective-like turbulent. Not to
be flown in... unless the turnpoint is in there. A ballasted
sailplane can easily surf the front, outrun it, or otherwise get out of
it's way. I'm sure an RV could too. Not so sure about the Maule.
Anyway, I'm curious... did anyone who experienced it on the ground
notice any lightning in the dust? That is, lighting separate from any
moisture clouds. Or is just too brutal to be looking around at that point?
