G’Day All,
I am about to order 3 sets of the auto conversion harnesses and plugs for myself and a couple of mates.
I have flown the 18 T in rain and wonder what the effect of flying in rain and all the front plugs getting pretty wet.
I once had a mini, and whilst I pretty well sealed the dizzy with a tennis ball, if the plugs got too wet it would run like a woolly goat.

Please! What is a "dizzy" AND just how on earth does "woolly goat" run?
Although I try to avoid rain, I have flown my auto converted M-14p light rain with no problem.

G’Day Jim,
Dizzy is slang for a distributor, which on the Austin Healy, MGA and Mini cooper that I had many years ago, and when they got wet in a downpour the dammed car would miss and all sorts.
We solved that by punching holes for the plugs wires in a tennis ball which we fitted over the distributer and would be a tight fit for the plug wires and this stopped the water from playing havoc with the distributer.
But if happened to be caught in a down pour and the plugs got to wet, then one faced the same problem.
I am going to fit a set of Barrett pistons to a engine that we are building as well as the Barrett plug conversion kit which I have already ordered.
Then some smart Alec told me that they “play up” in the rain which we all try and avoid but at times we do so.
I was coming back from a show about 2 ½ months ago and whist visibility was not too bad, 3 of us had to fly thru showers of pouring rain.

I have also observed mere atmospheric humidity degrading the performance of plug wires that were old and dried out. In the dark, even if the wires haven't been exposed to water, you can see the arcing.

All I can say is that if you want to keep the ignition system that was designed and produced for the engine and replace the wires with new silicone wires, I've got plenty of it.

I had no problem with the stock ignition harness on either of my Yak-52s.

I don't understand why it makes a difference flying into,rain or not. The motor is more efficient and you don.t get wet.
I have regularly flown under heavy rain condition with my 18T without noticing any difference.
No problem of water playing with whatsoever. By the way don.t tell it to you motor it doesn't know about Taino....
The only problem flying into rain is that it will damage your original blade.the drops of water becomes very harmfull for a wooden blade.
For the rest we have installed the Dennis automotive conversion kit with the anti moisture plate for the magneto on our 52 and it has solved a moisture problem with an old original harness. We also have flown the 52 under rain condition without any problems?
So I can confirm that sometime you can get a drop in magneto because of humidity with an old original harness and that installing Dennis automotive kit with the plate solved our problems, Yes.

Guys, I watched Bud & Ross Granley perform an incredible aerobatic routine at the Arlington Fly-In this last weekend. Bud flys a Yak 55 & Ross a Yak 18T with M14P engines. I took a close look & saw that they both had auto spark plug conversions with silicon plug wires. Seem that they are very confidentwith that conversion!!

For the rest we have installed the Dennis automotive conversion kit with the anti moisture plate for the magneto on our 52 and it has solved a moisture problem with an old original harness. We also have flown the 52 under rain condition without any problems?
So I can confirm that sometime you can get a drop in magneto because of humidity with an old original harness and that installing Dennis automotive kit with the plate solved our problems, Yes.
