Well I just got back from OSH for my trip over this year to
secure my campsite and I got a bit of a surprise!
As those of you who were camping in 2010 can attest, that place
was ALL MUD last year, with huge ruts, some of them probably
12" deep, from trucks and tractors. I'm here to tell
ya that you wouldn't even know that today. Surprisingly,
they were able to smooth out and improve the grounds to such
a degree that I really didn't notice any evidence of last
years mess. The grass is nice, and there is one more thing
I don't remember from other years. Many (most?) of the
rows up where I've been camping seem to have trees, surprisingly
maturing trees, on them. I've attached a blurry (I was
in a hurry) photo of the area near my sites. I may have
overlooked the trees in past years, but there are lots
of them now, and I think in 2-5 years there's going to be
a lot of great shade available for everyone.
At any rate, the grounds are in great shape, and there's a lot
of activity, and things are pulling together quite well from
the looks of it.
This year the sites seem to be filling a little faster than
previous years, and it's filling in an odd way, where the
sites are more shotgun scattered around the grounds. So
finding contiguous sites isn't quite as easy. I arrived
on the same day, near the same time, as always, and yet
I'd have to say that there seemed to be a bunch more
things staked out, further out from me, that I wouldn't
have expected. Perhaps folks are trying to make sure
they get the high ground, but whatever it is, the place
seems to be filling well. There aren't that many actual
campers there yet, but those will be coming in over the
next few days.
As usual too, on the way over I spent a bit of time in
IMC, having an absolutely beautiful, soggy wet cloud
trip. Many of you may know, one of the things I love
about living where I do is that we get awesome IMC
conditions sometimes, and today was one of them. Stable
air masses, and cool clouds. It's a blast.
The trip home wasn't quite as nice. I knew when I left
that I was running against time, as a big rainy mass
of heavy rain was coming towards home. Even with a
fairly quick-turn, I wasn't able to totally beat it.
There was a fair amount of lightning in some areas of
the mass, but looking at the picture on WSI and comparing
it to what was out the window...and, staying VFR
with good 4000' ceilings, I could tell that I wasn't
going to be too near the worst parts where there was
lightning, so I pressed on into the rain and was able
to make it home without getting anything worse than
5-7 mile vis and 3000' ceilings, and no bright
flashes around me. The ride was also almost perfectly
smooth...so this was, at least on the forward half
of it, just a large mass of rain. The back side was
where all the action was, and I wasn't going there!
Also, the prepaid camping went fairly well. It's
something new they did this year, to allow you to
pay for sites in advance. You still need to stake
them, but it did save a little data entry time
at the camping tag booth.
Looking forward to another great week for OSH 2011!

Tim
Making plans for our first time flying into Oshkosh. We tried for Sun n Fun this spring but only made it to South Carolina, LUCKLY. We cannot leave before next Sunday afternoon at the earliest. I would like to arrive at Oshkosh early in the morning to avoid the mad rush and get situated. That being said it would have to be Tuesday morning. I would like to camp near the other RV-10s , any chance that might happen? Any tips/help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ron,
It's great to have people flying in from far away.
It's always interesting to talk to the folks who traveled
a ways to get there. Regarding camping by the other RV-10
folks, this year there isn't any RV-10 group site
arrangement. So nobody has coordinated any sort of camping
sites. I've got mine already, and I know some other people
will show up throughout the coming week, but this year it's
basically every man for themselves. I'm not sure what next
year will bring, but I think we grew past the manageable
group camping arrangements, so I'm not too sure it'll happen.
This doesn't mean you can't camp, of course, but you're
unlikely to be camping next to other RV-10 folks without
making pre-arrangements before they stake their sites.
Now if you're talking about camping with your plane, you may
end up by other RV-10's in that case....but the homebuilt
camping is generally pretty disorganized by make/model.
You'd likely be close to plenty of RV-10 guys, but they park
them as they bring them in so you never know.
OSH is just one big "winging it" time!

Thanks Tim
Yes I think we plan on camping with out RV-10. I've never stayed overnight while at Oshkosh. I think we miss out on meeting a lot of people. I'm going to Oshkosh this year to hopefully meet with guy's like you and others I corresponded with on the various forums. I just received news that a prior commitment has been postponed so I can leave whenever I want now. What day would you suggest we arrive in order to get a half decent site and avoid the masses in arrival.
Thanks Ron

Hopefully the overall weather improves. North of OSH we've had severe thunderstorms, some tornados, high 90's with humidity near 100% the last couple days and the heat index is supposed to be in the 115 range this week. Of course last week it was in the 70's and I had my windows open and the AC shut down. No flooding though, that was a few weeks back.

It really is brutal up here where I am right now, with humidity
about as high as it can get without actually raining, along with
mid-90's for temps. The good news is the forecast was revised
so that over the weekend it's the high 80's instead of 90's,
and next week sunny and high 70's. So if the forecast can just
hold out, it could be a superb week for the show.

Hi Ron,
To get the best sites, you'd probably want to drop everything
and leave NOW. But, to avoid the mass arrivals, you probably
should shoot for Saturday at the very latest. Most years
I've flown in Friday and it was very relaxed with very little
traffic. But Saturday thru Monday it is very hopping, so
avoid anything after Saturday a.m. if you don't like traffic.
Personally, I love it when it's busy, other than when some
schmo takes a digger on the runway and causes the traffic
to back up over Ripon, but I'm a bit weird that way.

Or get behind a J-3 Cub. He has to fly almost straight down to get up to an airspeed equal to our stall speed

Hmm, that should be exciting...Cherokees mixing with Bonanzas with
same arrival time.
