Looking for some experiences with the Matco nose wheel axle modification.
My RV-6A flew for two years with the standard machined cups inserted in the
nose wheel bearings and axle bolt tightened to 7 foot pounds. Never had a
problem but I also took some lister's advice and kept the tire pressure to
25 PSI and less to minimize problems. In December I installed the Matco
nose wheel axle. Tightening the big aluminum nut on the end by hand didn't
quite line up the slot with the anti-rotation screw so I tapped it about 1/8
inch more to get in the slot. Rotating the wheel around the new axle still
showed some drag but it was either that or having the nut too loose and not
having the rollers snug against the races.
Matco instructions did note that you could carefully trim the inside portion
of the integral wheel bearing seals to eliminate some of the drag but I
haven't done that yet, not sure how much it will buy me. This past week I
removed the nose pant and inspected the tire for my trip to OSH. I saw that
the edges were ragged as if they were dragging on the pant. But it wasn't
the pant, looking at the inside of the fork I noticed two scuff marks that
had to come from the edge of the tire. Looking at the clearance with the
tire stationary it appears there is at least 1/4 inch + and even with only
20 PSI in the tire it looks like plenty of clearance. But obviously the
edges of the tire are rubbing, I assume after landing when lowering the
wheel is spreading the tire width enough to touch the fork (I always try to
lower the wheel gently so I'm not sure why that would happene but it
obviously is...).
Changing the tire, I noticed the sidewall says max PSI is 70. Got me to
thinking that maybe I should be putting quite a bit more than 25 PSI in
there to stop the scuffing. Problem is, after I did the axle mod I noticed
some vibration from up front after letting the nose wheel down and applying
some brake before turning off the runway. I didn't have that with the old
Van's setup. I'm wondering if that was because of the wheel bearing seal
drag and should I cut the inside portion away to lessen it or something
else. Anyone out there who's done the Matco nose axle mod experiencing this
and has anyone explored the new dynamic of this modification? The tire
scuffing against the fork tells me it needs more pressure than I'm keeping
in it. Folks who've done the axle mod, how much air are you putting in the
nose tire now and how is it working. Thanks.

I have to admit that after 4500 landings the problems with nose wheel in the RV 6A are still mysterious to me.
Still I believe that tire scuffing is the most serious problem, causing flats and perhaps shimmy.
For the past year I have been using 40 psi in all three wheels, no flats and no shimmy. easier to shove back in the hangar.
If I were you I might give it a try.

I have the Matco nosewheel axle on my 8A and use 40psi on all tires with good results. No rubbing and less shimmy than with the Vans nosewheel bearing design.
