John,

Theres an O ring in there that probably is damaged, has dirt or a small flake of aluminum keeping it from sealing
properly. I had to remove one early on that was leaking and just cleaning it was all it needed. I have lexan windows
and the auto fuel(ethanol) from that drain gets into the rivets there and causes it to crack. This happens when someone
slams the door up to the wing to get it to attach. Anyway don't let it go and damage those nice bubble doors.

John, I had the same thing. It is the O ring that seals the fuel sampler. I drained the tank and removed the fitting and replaced the O ring. Make sure that the O ring is compatable to the fuel that you use.

After cleaning the area with a cloth and examining it, it looks like the drip is coming from the sampler's hole. I checked the tightness of the fitting and it is secure.

Furthermore I pulled on the fitting to make sure that it was fully down and not stuck slightly up/

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution short of draining my fuel and replacing the fitting?

The "Hints for Homebuilders" guys (EAA website) Dick and Bob Koehler said at a workshop at Airventure that those sampler valve seals are not serviceable.   Cost to replace, around $10.

John,
You might want to lay in a supply of those o-rings.  Happened on both 701s I built.

Does anyone have the ACS part number for o-rings that fit the Zenith
supplied samplers?

John: I had to replace the first set of drains on my 701. They came

with a black "O"ring and did not last 6 months. I had to also replace a
side window cause I left the door up and fuel drained on the window and
caused crazing.

The ACS part # is 05-01865 and it is called Saf-Air Drain Valve
CAV-110. It should have a blue "O"ring. I have not had to replace any
of these valves once I installed the ones with the blue "O" ring.

Hey Guys

What is the thinking with regard to why the black O-ring fails, and the blue
one works? Is this possibly an issue with alcohol in the fuel that is
deteriorating the black O-rings?

The black ones are probably neoprene which will be degraded by alcohol in the fuel and the blue ones are probably silicone which is impervious to the fuel.

I need to buy some all-fuel compatible O-rings for my mechanical fuel pump and my primer.  Anybody got a good source for fluorosilicone (or similar) O-rings that sells in small quantities?

What fuel sampler valve does Zenith supply these days?

My samplers, from back in a 2000 kit, are brass and the kind that you used to see on cars to drain the radiator. It has a handle with a hole in the center. When the handle is turned it screws out and the fuel comes through the hole. As best as I can see, the sealing is done with brass against brass, no O-rings of any kind. I have had one drip and now need to keep it really tight.

What happened to my 701 at the beguining, during the first test hours was that, even that we cleanned the tank well after installing the gas gauge, there was a little piece of aluminum from the cutting that got betwen the valve and the seat, we just got the valve off, saw the tiny piece and cleaned, no problem since in several years...
