I have pretty much already made my mind up but I have to ask anyway. If someone was looking for a 4 pc cowl what would one in good used condition be worth? How often is anyone ever looking for one?
I am putting an Avid mk4 cowl on and it obviously is not a perfect fit. I am thinking of cutting up the old cowl to combine it with the new to ease installation. I just hate to cut up a good cowl if it is worth as much to someone else as my time to fabricate all new parts would be to me. And in case anyone is wondering test fitting has shown that an HKS and an Avid cowl looks bush plane sexy!

Jim, Do you already have an HKS engine. There is a fellow at our airport that has a very low time one for sale that he pulled from his Kitfox IV to install an 0235 when he put it on floats.

Hi James, I have to agree with you about the looks of the Avid MK IV cowl verses the round Kitfox cowl. I have a MK IV cowl that I have to remodel for my Kitfox 4 also. I'm flying an Avid MK IV now and the cowl is way easier to see over than the round cowl when on the ground. If I was you, I would add to the back of the Avid cowl whatever you have to to make it fit. I am going to do just that myself. It will end up being a three piece cowl when it's done, a boot cowl up to the fire wall, and then a top and bottom cowl from there forward. When I put my Jabiru engine in my Avid I had to do much the same thing with the two piece cowl I bought from Avid. Fortunatly it was long enough and fit the windshield okey. I ended up cutting the top and bottom off at the fire wall, fiberglassed them togeather, and then shortened up the front two pieces about 1 1/2" so they fit the front of the engine. Here is a picture of what it ended up looking like. If you need any more details of how I did it, just ask. Take care,
Jim Chuk

Pat,
If James already has his engine, I would be interested in seeing what you friend has to offer.

Pat, Ryan, I already have my engine so you guys have at it.
Jim I am very interested in picking your brain about a few things. I will pm you since I doubt most of it would be very beneficial to everyone else.

If you are discussing HKS engine and performance umbers I would love to see it here. As reliable as my 582 has been, I tend to worry in the background, and the fuel consumption is quite high. I would love to stop looking at the egt gauge all the time.

I know a few others are already running HKS on this forum, and Jerry at Green Sky Adventures had one on a Mod 2 that he did a lot of flight tests with. I can assure you I will post numbers once mine is flying but it will be several months.

I spoke with Gene in Rockford. He actually has a Subaru for sale, not an HKS. I'd like to have that much horsepower, but not at the cost of the extra weight.
If anyone else knows of a used HKS for sale let me know.

The search for a used HKS can be an exhausting one. I spent over a year looking for one and decided to just buy new. A new one is $9300 ($11700 with a KF FWF and an EIS) and it is hard to find a used one for $6000, they are usually more like 7-8000. Almost none of the components the previous owner have will transfer to the KF. So the question is how much is it worth to buy a used engine and not know the honest history. I personally decided that $1-1500 was not worth the risk and the wait. If you are going to search for a used one familiarize yourself with the serial numbers that indicates the upgrades. I believe 10400 is the important one which extends TBO from 500 to 1000.
