Apologies for the repeat post (lost email).
Does anyone have good quality GIF/JPG files of the chinese
airforce insignia they could forward off-list?
If anyone is interested, Transport Canada states that the decals are
"24" in height by 59" in length to be displayed on sides and top of
the right wing and bottom of the left wing with the same dimension."
I guess they did their homework....
Thanks,
Phil Nicholson

Phil;
Interesting. TC certainly does specify minimum dimensions and other details
for registration marks.
They assuredly do not specify PLAAF, or any other military or countries
markings, dimensions, or any other information.
Where are you located. I have a "pounce" pattern for the insignia if you
can't find anything else. In Oliver, BC.

Guys
This is about the best graphic i've seen of the PLAA insignia. I think you could possibly scale it to suit the size requirement.

Hi Walter
TC “did to” specify the type and dimensions J
The details came back in a letter from Ottawa authorising 4”call
letters underneath the horizontal stabilizer. It also “gave me
permission” to retain the dark green camouflage (their words) and the
country’s insignia. I was then informed where the insignia was to be
located and at what size. This included the number on the cowling and
registration number on the tail. I was instructed to carry this
authorization letter with me in the aircraft.
I have no idea whether this is a new TC initiative or the product of
an over-zealous clerk.

If you look close at the graphic of insignia, you'll see the space between the bar and the star is wider on the left side than the right. The drawing needs to be balanced. The left side is more accurate. AAMOF the space between the star and bar could be a tad wider. The distance should be about 3 x the width of the white band around the star.
I found this out on a trip to China 1999 when I showed off my CJ-6's paint job in a photo to the museum folks in Beijing. They thought it was very nice but pointed out that the bars were to close to the star. It was a long time before I could bring myself to tell all the DVT guys (whom I copied it from) that it was slightly wrong.

As a follow on,
I am beginning to wonder if Transport Canada is giving me poor information.
Could someone please confirm their 'official' PLAAF insignia is indeed 24"x59"?
Is this the same dimension on fuselage and wings?
Thanks for the help so far.

Hi Phil;
My pattern was taken from my CJ prior to paint stripping.
I will check the dimensions and advise. Appeared to be the same in all
locations and too damn big!

Guy's
I'd be very interested in an updated graphic if you manage to run one off.
Are you saying TC need to approve the markings and are giving a hard time about it?
I have a feeling we might have some 'issues' in the UK to get the markings approved.

I posted a pdf Illustrator file a while back that is clean and correct. I'm posting from my phone so it's hard to find the link but it's on the list. The wikipedia one is crap.

My insignia are 24" by 58.5" upper wings and fuselage. The wings are "as received" from China. The fuselage insignias were painted after importation but appear to have been placed over the originals so I think those dimensions are correct.

Here's the cleanly drawn insignia I did as a PDF.

I did a lot of measuring and made up files for PLAAF decals some years ago. (lost files in computer crash). What I discovered was a lot of inconsistency in actual dimensions between "original" airplanes from China. Obvious to me that these insignia and paint are field applied, much like our military practices. As example I have a 80's era book of USAF colors and schemes, not real precise except for color numbers which I'll bet vary by batch.

Pete,
Thanks for sharing this.
For those looking to use this insignia for their CJ, a place like FASTSIGNS does a great job creating what you need. Form their web site you can upload the image, tell them the dimensions and arrange for a quote by a local shop. The quality is excellent. Pretty much if you can think of it, they can do it... things like N numbers, nose art, those large cowling numbers, Chinese lettering, etc.

Great resource for the warbird community.
