The Factory Tech Talk page in the March edition of the Europa Flyer =
describes the substitution of the nose leg bungee by two metal springs. =
This modification was initiated in the Netherlands by Nico Groot and in =
the meantime several dutch builders have applied it in their trigears. =
These springs were developed and made by the same dutch factory and they =
were also used by Ian Rickard in his PFA approved mod nr. 71.
Might any builder want a set of these springs for immediate delivery, I =
have ordered 10 pairs at the factory in order to save on machine =
installation expenses. This way I have now 6 pairs left at the cost =
price of 100,00 Euro (GBP 67,00 - US$ 125,00) a pair plus shipment =
(priority shipment to Canada was 30 Euro last week, USA will be about =
the same, England ??).
I don't want to make a profit, just maybe an investment in some =
prospective friends. One of these days I will be shipping some pairs to =
England (Lincolnshire). For 3 or 4 people this is a chance to get a pair =
without delay at a cheap price. First in first out. If somebody is =
interested let him take contact with me. Email works best!

Wasn't there a builder in the US who was going to have some springs made? I
can't recall the name. What ever happened to that project?

Gary, I am sorry to tell you that I can't help you. I just had 5 pairs of

Despite that: Happy building. Jack

Hi Gentlemen,
I live very close to that Dutch factory. It would be wise to make a big
list, as long as possible and order all springs together. I arranged 10
pairs for Jac van Heeswijk and payed them cash, so I didn't have to pay VAT.
The price was about 82 Euros a pair. Jac has already supported them all to
his Europa friends
The more you order, the cheaper they will be because the cost isn't the
material (stainless steel) but the "settings" of the machinery. 20 pair of
springs will cost less than 10 and 50 les than 20. The only point is that I
have to pay those guys cash to avoid taxes. I don't know what the prices are
to sent it to other countries, but if you arrange mogas in the uk for me I
can also fly them to the UK for you (Not to far from the channel crossing)
for you in my Europa. That's a lot cheaper for a large number of springs
toghether ans you have also the opportunity to see how it is fitted in my
bird. The max load in the Europa is 40 kg, so I can carry +/- 40 piars of
springs in one trip in my hold, if it should be more I can find other Dutch
Europa friends to join me with their birds......

Whats the score with fitting these - are they approved by the PFA yet? If
so, has Mod 71 been published? (there was some talk about clips to prevent
the possibility of the springs coming off the end of the cross tube etc.

All
I hate to be the one to have to say this.
Europa04 is the only proper supplier of Mod 71. Here I am on the west =
side of the west side of the pond and I have to remind you guys to =
support your airplane manufacture. I am sure other have the same =
thought as I, but are too polite to say a work.
I am not so polite. I say "buy the Mod 71 from Europa 04" and do the =
modification according to the correct paperwork.

Hi Clif,
For your information, the springs we designed and ordered in Holland are the
ones which were used to get the PFA approval. I flew them to Fairoaks last
year myself for Ian and Ivor to get their UK PFA approaval. Our aircraft
were used for the prototype springs and testing. The Dutch springs are the
ones which set the standard. We made the modifications and if I order them
for you guys, you'll get the specs. discribed in the Mod made via Ian
Rickard for the PFA approval.
Remember, it is the design of Nico Groot, kopied by me, Rob and Jac. Nico
did the engeneering and we did the testing and pioneering on 4 Dutch
Europa's. (PH-AMD, PH-IEN, PH-JAI and the PH-LOB) It is not a Factory Mod.
Originally Andy from Europa 04 wasn't interested last year at Kemble at all
(!), when I showed him my prototype springs. Ian and Ivor were the ones who
made this Mod official in the UK.
The higher the number I place in a order for you all, the lower the price.
But, I do it for you, not for myselve. I don't want to earn a penny out of
it. For me it is a hobby. If you don't want them, be my guest. It saves me a
lot of time and effort....
Regards, Tim.

I think Tim is doing a fantastic job and we should do our best to take him
up on his very generous offer.
Tim - how about those of us living in the West Country i.e. Somerset for me?
- How near can we get a pick up if we order?

I have to say that I'm with Cliff on this one, especially for those working
under the PFA.
Mod 71 is "factory approved" and is therefore (relatively) free of
paperwork. Unless the Dutch springs have "standard mod" status then surely a
45 mod fee will be payable?
Use it, or lose it comes to mind. How long would the factory last if we all
went and purchased parts direct from other suppliers?

Hear, hear. Without taking anything away from the Dutch guys who introduced
the concept and the early springs, Ian Rickard and Terry Clarke, in the UK,
have put a lot of work in for Europa 04, recognised by Andy and the Company,
to design, supply and support Europa with Mod 71, at no gain to themselves.
Please support the Company.

Thanks to Nico Groot , Ian Rickard and all those involved in producing mod 71 and making it available to the rest of us- and the factory. Having now read the PFA paperwork I'm puzzled as to why the springs are a left and right handed pair rather than two identical springs.
I'm sure there is a good reason and perhaps I should ask Nico or Ian directly, but I thought the answer would be of general interest....

Steve,
I cannot find MOD 71 on the Europa site. According my information it is an
Europa Club MOD. I have the approval data from Ian Rickart who did the
approval request with the English PFA. The data is based on the properties I
have placed on the website of http://www.europaowners.org
If it would be an official Europa04 MOD, I agree you all have to order them
by Andy. If Europa04 doesn't trade, they cannot survive. Europa04 and Andy
deserve it! It's is important for all Europa builders and owners to keep
Europa 04 alive! In that case I keep my hands off.
But unfortunately I didn't see a "MOD71"on their website jet....(?)
So, until it is just an Europaclub MOD, the MOD is based on Nico's data, our
experience and we payed much more for our springs because we ordered just
one set in a time for ourselves.......Nico and Rob even had also the first
set of springs installed which were not tight enough. So they are the real
pioneers.
I didn't earn a penny out of it, (it only cost me money to order, collect
for Europafilles and fly them to diverent places) neather did Nico or Jac.
For us it's just a part of the hobby. The only diverence Ian made was that
we originally used two springs completely the same. In the offical Club Mod
describtion there is a left winded and right winded ciol spring (mirror)
with the same properties. That is what we changed in the last order for Jac.
Our springs are made from stainless steel and after one and a half year of
service I can tell you it works fine !
Lets first see what the status is of "MOD 71".
Regards, Tim.
