Mr. Voroin,  Can you tell me what kind prop you are running, the pitch and diameter?  I have a Lightning also and have never seen the speeds your Lightning is achieving.  What altiitude and RPM do you run to achieve the 136-142 kt cruise?  What did your Lightning weigh in at?  Thank you for your time in answer these question. I'm sure you will not have any problem selling you Lightning.

Thank you

Sensenich WC62FK58 at 2950 rpm. 136 ktas is low level, standard Florida day, 142 ktas is higher up at 10000 or so. Weight - don't have the W&B on me, but it is a fairly light airplane, even with the high capacity battery.
What's worth noting, it is also a very clean airplane - no rough wing walks, intersection fairings on the wheel pants etc (I do have both steps though). I also have the N324AL in here, and that airplane is just a bit shy of those numbers even without the wheel pants on (same prop, no wing walks, cleaned it up here and there - very fascinated to see the speeds with the full fairings).
Also, Lightnings do perform the best when they are clean and polished. Best thing you can do, is get some ReJex and give the plane a bit of shine. We've tried a lot of different brands, and while ReJex is expensive, it's well worth it (matter of fact, some of those polishes aren't worth the packaging they're in).
Best of luck!

I am getting approximately the same performance with mine. I too do not have my W&B in front of me but I recall around 830 empty.

Max,  Thanks for the information.  I always have my Lightning polished but I will try the ReJex and look at cleaning the aircraft up in other areas.  I ran a WC62FK58 when I first built the airplane, yet it only posted 116 knots at 2850 rpm which is what I crusie at. Not sure if the prop was not made the best or what. I then put a Prince Prop on and now cruise at 125 knots at 2850 rpm.  I will run 2950 rpm and see what numbers I get yet, I'm sure I will not push more than 5 to 7 knots extra with 1000 more rpm's

Could you explain what intersection fairings on the wheel pants etc is? I do have wing walk on both sides, how much drag and what gain do you think will be achieved?

One area is my canopy closes flush all around yet in the back left it does not seal on the rubber, as I can see light between the rubber and top of the canopy. Any thought here?

Also, if the plane is air tight, and you have the vents open, what does that do for air being rammed in yet has trouble getting out?  Right now when I have the Auto pilot engaged, and close off the vent say 50% and 100% the plane does fly faster.

Great reply to the guy who called BS on your last post.  We always see these types in life & they are like flies, they normally are a pest always in the way.

I attached a picture on my Lightning

Thanks again for the info.
Gary

Darn it, I was hoping that was not the case. Thanks Pete.

I thought the LS rule was that if the airplane had ever been flown outside of the LS parameters, i.e.. in flight adjustable prop, or a prop that allowed the plane to exceed those parameters then it could never be flown as a LS, even if it was modified to conform to LS parameters.

If that rule has been changed that would be fantastic. If we can fly our experimental at faster speeds for several years then decide to fly LS and modify the plane to conform that is great news.

Does anyone know the what that rule is today?

To suggest that any brief transgression of the LS rules makes an airplane no longer Light-Sport might be a major stretch. I believe that what Pete is suggesting in his quote of the rules is that certification must be accurate and that continuing operations must be compliant.

I would just note that during flight testing, if a condition was found that exceeded the LS standards, it would be reasonable to correct it, then and only then, to note it in the logbook as being in compliance. Additionally, if, after so being certified by the owner in said logbook, if any parameter was exceeded, for example if reflexing the flaps after maintenance were to increase the clean stall speed beyond 40 knots, it would need to be corrected immediatly. If it was discovered that running the engine at a higher RPM exceeded the speed requirement, an appropriate placard should be installed, I should think.  If any standard was exceeded at a later time because of, including but not limited to, faulty instrumentation, equipment changes,  modifications, engine performance changes, an immediate corrective action should put one in compliance. We do fly EXPERIMENTAL aircraft, so some deviation on a temporary basis is to be expected. It is the correction back to the standard that is required.

In the case of the installation of a variable pitch propeller that was adjustible from the cockpit, it would be a little hard to justifiy.   On the other hand, if the propeller pitch change was connected to engine power settings, which could only be altered on the ground, a case for compliance might be made.

In my conversations with FAA MIDO officials, I did not detect a desire to enforce Light-Sport standards except in the cases of blatent disregard for the rules. However, if you are looking for a fight with the FAA, they will give it to you.

What does your log book say? What are the entries that you made there during phase one testing? If during your phase one tests you found (and noted in the log) that stall speed was 45 knots or lower then that part of the envelope meets light sport. What have you entered for Vh? If it is 120 knots or less then that part of the requirements is met. Same for gross weight, seats, etc. During your phase one test it was your duty to explore the operational parameters and note them in the log and eventually use the numbers you discovered to create your POH. You are the manufacturer of the aircraft and what you state for performance is what the FAA will go by unless that performance is out of step with the kit manufacturer’s performance numbers.

Gary

Thank you

So what if your dog set your logbooks and Pilot Operating Handbook on fire and they were completely destroyed AND there were no other copies of the documents? (or you might happen to leave the logs on top of the trash can, which got accidentally covered.......)

Wouldnt you have to perform a series to tests to reconstruct that data?

I have a couple of Experimental projects with no logs. I am simply required to reconstruct them as good as I can, and attest to that. They will have to be flown to determine if they are Light Sport.  No big deal. I suspect the RV-6 will not be compliant, but I will not know that until I fly it for at least 25 hours.

If you ask for permission, you may not get it. Of course, it is illegal to destroy logs willfully. I am not suggesting that. My point is that there may be things you can think of to do. Remember the country song, "That' My Story and I'm Sticking To It".

So what if the airplane is modified to meet the requirements and you choose to perform Phase I again as if it was a major modification?

Interesting discussion about props and speeds, keep the numbers coming !! I am still testing my Lightning and with a WC62FK58 I'm only getting about 120kias at 2900rpm at low level on a std day which is a little less than I had expected now that I have the wheel fairings on. Has there been any know issues with these props and how can you check the pitch ? Also dose anyone know if these props are balanced at the factory ? I am using the supplied composite spinner and i'm getting some vibration through the rudder pedals especially at 2700-2800rpm. Looking at getting a dynamic balance Confused
Any other tips for squeesing some more kts out appreciated! Idea
