We are building a 601 XL The airplane will not have the extra tanks installed, but I will like to post my point of view:

If the space for mantainance of the finger screen and replacing the hose, is limited by the rib, then. Why not making a reinforcing plate of aluminum (could be from the same 0.025 or a little heavier) inside and of course around the inspection hole, then cut the piece of rib only enough to have space to work?

Will be good idea to ask ZAC, I am sure the area will be structuraly sound with almost the same weight., that is the point in first place.

Will study that part of the plans tonight, I am almost sure that I have the drawing with the option in my set of plans, just I am not completly sure because I will not have the option installed.. so dont remember studying it,

I just checked the space between nose ribs #5 and #6 (approx. 0.4 inch). It is hardly possible to install an access panel that also gives access to and allows changing of the finger filter. In my opinion it is impossible to change the finger screen at the outer tanks without removing the tank.

Well, how often does it happen that you have to change finger screen filters? It would be probably easier to flush the fuel line/finger screen/outer tank in a reverse way with water or so (for cleaning of the finger screen, after a certain amount of flight time).

Gary:

That's exactly what I was thinking about yesterday. Nevertheless the space is still very limited and I just don't know if it is worth the effort.

I do have access panels installed for the inner tanks and am able to check these finger screens from time to time. I see the outer tanks as "auxiliary fuel tanks" and don't intend to t/o or land while using them. Therefore it is also not so critical.
