What kind of paint or treatment did you use on your instrument panel?  I'm leaning toward flat or low gloss black with texture (or even wrinkle finish) to hide imperfections and to reduce fingerprints.

Larry,

Why in the world would you want to have imperfections in your panel?

I used Rustoleum from a rattle can, medium to dark gray, with white lettering (see photo).

Could be because it is built by an imperfect builder!  Nothing major, just a few scuffs that will probably be concealed with multiple coats of regular spray paint.

I used cherry veneer, you varnish then use transfer letters for any text
then varnish a few more times.

Tim
My intention is to use 3 ply mahogany aviation plywood finished with a water based product "The Good Stuff". Steinair recommended to place a silicone fabric between the plywood and the aluminum to prevent the plywood from cracking due to temperature expansion differences. Your panel looks great it has character and nostalgia.

Ken:

How thick a ply?  Three score sounds weak...  Aviation ply's that I have used are 5 and 7 score.  Keeping the scores high and the ply's thin will give strength and the gauges will not be recessed too far.

Barry;

The plywood is my rendition of a finish for the aluminum panel in place of paint or perhaps even powder coat. My intention was not to use the plywood as a substitute for the aluminum panel. I find the plywood easier to handle than the veneer, a matter of personal preference.

I don't think it matters very much what paint you use on the instrument
panel itself. Glare on the panel is not really a problem. I would use a
semi-gloss or duller rather than a gloss (a gloss is harder to patch, in
any case). But what DOES matter is to have the top of the turtle deck
above the panel a semi-gloss or flat (not very flat - it is too hard to
clean). Then, glare is not a problem. I am attaching a picture showing
what I mean.

That is understood Ken, I did not think otherwise.  Matter of fact replacing the aluminum with would is not allowed.  It would not meet kit design.

And I agree 100% with the idea of plywood as an overlay.  The veneer has many expansion and contraction issues - Very easy to crack and split.  Even with the cloth backing as mentioned.  The cloth will bring in its own problems - Holding moisture in contact with the aluminum and wood.

Did you check out 5 and 7 score plywood as mentioned?  They usually come with a VERY nice top sheet of A or AA grade Beach.  It stains or paints extremely well.
