First, ultrasonic leak detector....priceless, found the leak in under 5 min.



The leak is where the t-piece fitting joins the bottom of the emergency valve in front cockpit. (see pic). I tried tightening the nut but found it would leak if I tried tightening it too much. I thought either the t-fitting might be cracked or the housing of the valve cracked. So, I took the 

t-piece out and found the rubber washer cracked and dry. So, I'm pretty sure that is the source. Housing looks fine, t-fitting not cracked either. 



Where do I get new washer? For that matter, probably will get two. Also, I trashed some of the screws that hold the top cover plate down to the inside of the plane, so need more of those as well. Thanks, Bill

Bill,Change it out for a CJ6 main air valve with SS needle, they don't have any rubber gaskets to go bad and I think (from your photo) it will be a pretty much plug and play operation.  I'd like to know myself so I'm willing to send you one to see if it will fit.  If it fits, pay me, if not send it back.

Doug, not sure I understand. Wouldn't the t-piece still need to be attached to the valve in the same manner?

Bill,The T fitting is flare, flare, pipe thread.  The pipe thread leg threads into the bottom of the valve, no rubber parts needed to seal.  I'll try to send you a picture, save a thousand words...........

Try Jill at M14P.  She may have the rubber washer in stock.  As for the 

screws, they are standard 4 mm screws.  I'd suggest replacing them with 

4 mm button head Philips screws. Can be either SS or zinc plated.

Doug, from the picture, I don't think the CJ valve will work for me. The top elbow fitting looks like it points directly down over the bottom fitting. My top elbow fitting is directed backwards away from bottom fitting. Don't think there is enough play in the tubing to attach it.

I would certainly try a metric o-ring.  Size it to the original if possible.

I haven't read all this posting but my valve was leaking. NAPA for the closest "o" ring size very fine sand paper, very fine. Put the o ring on a stick spin the stick and sand it till it fits. Haven't leaked since. If this isn't the correct problem, sorry. I'll read further next time.

Problem solved. Went to ACE hardware store and bought 3 different sizes of o-rings. Went to hangar and found the one that fit the best. Pressure tested to 5 atm, no leak. Went for flight and re-check, seems good to go.



For the person who wanted to know which leak tester...it is a Miller Speacialty Tools Model6904A, found it on ebay

Look for a used Kent Moore J-41416 Accutrak Ultrasonic Leak Detector. Relatively inexpensive and will end up an indispensable item for chasing pneumatic system problems. They are often listed on eBay.

Guys, what ever make of ultrasonic leak detector you buy make sure it has a set of head phones.  I bought a Amprobe off Ebay-- $150.00 as I recall, but that was 10 years ago.  It works well for me.
