Does anyone have (or know of) a good 4-stroke engine for sale that I could install on my Kitfox IV. I’ve been looking for a used HKS for a while, but my 582 was recently removed to replace a $40 trigger and is now estimated at $3400 for repair. So, my 4-stroke search has become a little more important. There was a Jabiru 2200 on barnstormers that I put an offer on about 5 minutes too late. I’d prefer to have something light-weight like a HKS or Jabiru 2200.

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Just wondering how they got you to $3400, since a complete rebuild is
about $2500 and a nice used motor can be had for $2-3k. (I just sold
mine for $1900.)

I already had $400 into the engine to finally diagnose the problem as the trigger. When we had the engine apart for that fix we noticed that the rear crank seal was leaking. Since my intent was to find a 4-stroke and sell the 582, I decided to pay for the 150 hr seal/gasket replacement (+$920). When the engine was torn down we found that the rotary valve shaft was almost split in two (+$320), and the crank was so bad that the PTO bearing fell off and a new bearing wouldn't stay on (+$1500). At that point you might as well just add the pistons (+$200) and get the sign off for a full overhaul.

Interestingly, the engine had no corrosion, which was supposed to be the big scare against using AMSOIL.

So, I can spend money on this 582, buy another 582 off of barnstormers, or just use the money toward an engine that I actually want to fly behind.

Ryan -

I just rec'd some info from Aviation Products Inc regarding a new tail wheel. Included in the package rec'd was the 48pg. June 2011 issue of AVIATOR'S BULLETIN. There is a new-in-crate Jab 2200 listed in the classifieds. Contact info is Larry 541|:|258|:|5029 www.LebanAir.com.

Note: I have no further knowledge or personal affiliation. Hope that helps, good luck!

I guess. I was trying to let folks know that they should be careful dealing
with Lebanaire, Lebanon, OR. I've had some bad experiences dealing with
them in the past.

Hi Ryan, I converted my Model III to a HKS in 2006 and now have 460+ hrs flying it. Converting to the HKS was the best money I spent on the Kitfox to date, the engine starts instantly runs flawlessly burns only 3 gph of 91 Oct auto gas, has a 1000 hr TBO and the operating cost is 1/2 of what it cost to operate a Rotax 582.

I've seen pics of your plane, and think it is the best HKS/Kitfox install out there. My grandfather had a HKS on a flightstar and I'd really like to install one on my plane. The problem is I can't afford new right now, and the only used ones that people want to sell are the s/n's 1-100 which were recalled and have no factory support.
