Bill, I built a CH601HD and I am installing a new engine and making a bunch of renovations. One is to put smaller wheels (500X5). I also inspected the landing gear parts and found quite a bit of rust.. so I sandlasted everything and painted the parts. At the same time, I decided to modify the nose wheel assembly to make it like it is on the 601XL... The Franlkin engine I'm installing is quite like an O-235; heavy... so I want to beef up the parts a bit. I also noticed that the lower nose bearing was wearing the landing gear tube... another reason to put the lower bearing that the XL has... it is made from a 1.496" (I thought it as 1.5" (notice the simley)) piece of Nyloil (thanks to those who provided that info). Nyloil is quite good... it absorb 2.5% of its weight max, tensile strenght of 10000 psi (UHMPWE is about 1000 psi, 6061-T6 about 42000 psi).
So, I decided to go with that.

| Michel-
As I originally said, I picked up on the thread late.
We met briefly a few years ago at Brampford, so I'm not surprised you're updating. My condolences if you had to pay duty on that huge slab of plastic. Couldn't you get anything smaller than a square foot?
I've professionally worked with plastics since 1968 so I'm familiar with their properties.
What alarms me is, you noticed wear on your NOSE GEAR TUBE? Please say you were running the original plans mandated metal on metal bearings!
While you have everything apart, investigate doing what a builder named Scott did and have your gear tubes chromed rather than paint them. I'm psyching myself up to tear everything apart to do it myself.
Bon chance...
Bill
