Hi Jeff,

Please take a few pictures of your threaded rod as you install it and
use it to tension the bungee.

One comment on this thread. I have heard several folks say things like
"Is it different on the HD". We must remember that Zenith has never had
any change version control on their models. Many different exact
designs exist for each major design type (701, 601HD, 601XL, etc.). If
you want to know the status of the design used by each builder you
really need to look at the exact copy of drawings they used. Even then
the parts often don't even remotely match the drawing if they were
ordered separately. On my XL this was most noticeable on the upper
engine mount fittings that go just behind the firewall.

Paul, please tell me more about those fittings. This has proven to be a weak point on my 601HD (version 5 plans).

I made new one with same layout but .080 4130 steel instead of .050.

Paul,
I'll be happy to take some pictures of the bungee cord replacement process. To me, the defining features of the HD are the bungee cord Main Gear legs and the thick constant chord wing airfoil. In actuality, my plane has lots of XL parts in it including the extra firewall supports and stiffeners, a forward hinged canopy, and a center console. I built over a long time and included new features as they were introduced. The fairings on the horizontal empenage were an upgrade kit to the origonal HD for instance. Per plans, there is no fiberglass fairing, just a blunt aluminum edge. Over time, the configuration of the firewall has changed a lot too, even within the XL model line.
