I’m currently looking at Transceivers, My original was to go with the Garmin SL40 but with the new frequency spacing 833 being introduced at some point, (garmin not currently supported) I’m now looking at alternative. My second choice is now the Funkwerk ATR833 which is interchangeable between the different frequncey spacing. Any info on quality of this Transceiver and general overall reviews would be welcome Thank you in advance.

Hi Richard,
I have the ATR 833 installed in my Europa G-c.e.r.i. I have had no
trouble with it. I do like the duel listening. Also very easy to set up
frequencies. When I bought mine the company was called Filtser. A few
years old, but still working very well.
Cheers Danny Shepherd.

Danny, Pat, and off line contacts,
Thank you for the info on the ATR 833. It looks like a good choice of Transceiver.

I too have been researching the comms. for some time.
The Garmin SL40 doesn't support 8.33 but does talk to the MGL Efis that i'm fitting. (change frequency from the Efis screen)
The XCom 760 doesnt support 8.33 but does talk to the MGL Efis.
The ATR 833 does support 8.33 but doesn't appear to talk to the MGL,
It's all a bit of a mish mash,
If any one knows of a comms. that does both and is preferably 2 1/4" panel
cut out then please let me know,
Steve.

Is MGL's own transceiver not 8.33 compatible? At least it talks to the
MGL Efis... See http://www.mglavionics.co.za/VHF10.htm

I had already looked at the MGL VHF 10, it too doesn't appear to support
8.33 channel spacing and is stuck on 25KHz, maybe 8.33 is not that important...
It talks to the Efis though,
Steve.

I just checked: According to the manual the "European versions" DO
support 8.33kHz channel spacing!

But are not EASA approved therefore "cannot" be legally used in Europe.

Thanks for bringing that up Frans.
It appears that MGL have launched a new radio called the V6 which
does support 8.33 and communicates with the Efis, I'd only seen the V10,
good old forum,
Steve.

I thought for homebuilts this is not necessary? At least not in the
Netherlands. We only need an EASA approved ASI, altimeter and compass.
The rest is optional and up to the builder. I could build the
transceiver myself if I wished to. Homebuild doesn't limit itself to
flying controls and such.

Hi Frans
In the UK the radio has to have a licence from the CAA and they will only accept approved devices.
I doubt if eurocontrol or any air traffic organisation would like just any ones lash up of a transceiver to be used for air traffic control for fear of all sorts of technical issues like break through onto adjacent channels.
I doubt if things are much different in other European country's.

Steve
Paul at Parts for Aircraft told me that the MGL will talk to the ATR 833 -
which is the basis on which I bought one!

Richard, well thats great.
I've taken another look at the manual and can't find any mention of external
frequency change , do you have the pin numbers that you connect to
on the D-Connector?
Steve.
