All Lightning community,
Joe Mathias passed away peacefully tonight about 7:20 PM. I had spend some time with him and Linda this afternoon as well as yesterday. Although today he was sleeping the entire time I was there, I can happily report that yesterday, the last words I heard him say were, "Lets go to the airport". Those few words say so much about Joe and obviously have so much meaning to all of us that love flying, airplanes and aviation. Joe was admired, respected, and loved by all that knew him and he will certainly be missed, not only in the Lightning community, but by all his aviation and other friends that he made over the 88 years of his life. I'm sure all of us salute Joe and all his tremendous accomplishments in aviation. And to Linda, our hearts go out to you in this time of grief.
Linda plans to make arrangements for a memorial service on Sunday, Nov 6, which is a special day for Joe - the day he started flying 72 years ago.

Blue Skies,
Buz Rich

"High Flight" by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

We never met Joe, but feels like we knew him well. Yesterday, after reading your e-mail, I said to Olena that I'd love to say "Let's go to the airport" when I'm 88.
Farewell, Joe Mathias.
All the strength in the world to Linda.

Linda,

Donna and I were so very sorry to hear about Joe passing last evening. I, for one was always happy to see Joe at the aviation related functions we attended with you guys. Joe always had good stories and you knew he loved aviation and folks that loved aviation as well. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dennis and Donna

Greg and I were so sorry to hear of Joe passing this morning. If Linda needs some "away time "the offer still goes out here in the desert of Marana , AZ. It is a great place to regroup and watch the sunsets. We realize Joe was 88 and we all hope we are as active and flying at that age. But for Joe I am sure he was just getting started. Our love and prayers to Linda and family . Greg and Crystal Hobbs

I have only spoken to Joe Mathias a couple times, but enough to appreciate his love of flying and sense of humor. We will miss you, Joe.

Linda, we share a part of your loss...... and our hearts and prayers are with you.

Linda,
Very sorry to hear about Joe's passing. It doesn't seem that long ago when It seems like only yesterday that I watched you two build that pretty white and yellow plane. Joe was always nice to me, the young pup trying to learn anything I could. You all will be in our thoughts and prayers! Brian W. Clear Lake, TX

Linda:

My thoughts and prayers are with you. While I had only met Joe a very few times, the conversation was always fun, and I was honored to share with him my thoughts about aviation, and get his feedback, and hear a few stories...

I am very thankful to Joe for his contributions to aviation, and service to our country. Blessings be with you...
