Cory,
In my case it will be necessary. My M-14 is currently torn apart on the hanger floor waiting on replacement gaskets before reassembly.
Break, Gill…the supercharger was fine. Nothing passed through it. No impeller bladed marring, scaring, nicking or frank destruction. No scaring on the diffuser or the stators. Some slight sand blasting on the stators. So those cylinder base nut lock tabs did not go through the supercharger unless that sucker has TITANIUM impeller blades. If that is the case then that soft steel lock tabs would have been an appetizer.
The insurance adjuster/inspector is betting malicious activity of the intentional type. Will leave that up to the city detectives and FBI. I’m betting the culprit will never be known. But I am having the last laugh…I’ve learned A LOT and have found a few hidden problems waiting to bite me on the ass.
Such are the joys of when it goes Bang..Ba…Bang…Bang at 100% on T.O. at 20 – 30 feet. It turns out it was not induction nor was it electrical. But yes, there was Shit bouncing around in cylinders #1,3,4,5,and 6. The 3 ball bearing are fine (no wear) and there was no metal in any of the sections. Only in the damned cylinders!
Just somebody did not like me…can’t imagine why!
Anyway, the good thing that came out of this sojourn is that a fuel pressure sending line was found to be on the edge of being a blow torch even after replacing it 4-5 years ago and I have learned a HELL OF A LOT about this 1930’s technology motor that I only thought I knew until I tore this sucker apart.
Anyway, Gill, Pappy, and George, you all have been a tremendous help in getting me to this point…my engine apart in pieces and sections on the hanger floor ( :>)) !
Seriously, between ya’ll and the manuals along with some of your cheat sheets she is ready to go back together as soon as stuff comes in from Aerostar.
Doug, you have been a huge help also with those exchangeable Chinese parts and stuff.
Sorry for this unusual touchy feely email….promise won’t happen again.

I share the experience below. I just had to replace a distributor on my M14 powered Wilga... It's a pain in the ass getting those air lines on and off, and depending on how much space you have, to get the third nut (you know which one I'm talking about!) off and back on.
On my first attempt, I got a reverse spin - doh! Second attempt and a few choice words, perfect! Quote: |
My experience with aligning the air-distributor was that it is an extremely delicate and frustrating device and very hard to get right. This may be due to the size of my fingers and hands, which are rather huge. Or maybe other worse things. Bottom line, don't do it unless you are DARN SURE it is necessary. |

Well any pics would be interesting.
Thanks
