Hi list members.
I would like to replace the wing struts with a streamlined lift struts
on my Zenith 701. Mostly due to rust forming on the old rounded lift
struts due to nick caused be small locks from gravel runways. I stored
the plane in a very humid hangar for two winters, which cause the
nicks to rust.
I received some streamlined lift struts from a friend who had a
Savannah (Zenith 701 rip off) and thought that since the streamlined
struts have been use on this type of plane for some years without
problems, they should be fine for my Zenith. The material looks very
sturdy and even more material than the old rounded struts I have on my
Zenith 701. I contacted Zenith factory and wanted to order the end
material for the struts, i.e. from the Zenith 750, which is now sold
with the streamlined struts. Understandably, they do not recommend
any other material than sold from their company, and will not sell me
the wing strut ends.
Can anyone advice on what to do? Should I just order the strut ends
from Savannah, or just make them myself from 4130 chromoly steel? I
would prefer the ready made end struts from Zenith, but to receive the
strut end material, I would need to order the streamline struts from
them, which is $1000.
The problem is, when I buy something from the USA for $1000, the end
price when delivered to my home in Iceland with the shipping cost
plus import taxes, the end price has doubled. $ 2000 for some lift
struts is a little too steep for me, even though it would be okay in
USA, but the price of the Icelandic krona is ridiculously low these
days.
Just to give you an idea, to fill up my Dodge with gasoline is $170 a
tank.
I really appreciate your advice.

Hi Johann,
I'd recommend you look carefully to see if you can use the ends that are
part of your original struts and put them on the
streamlined struts. With a bit of care, the adaption shouldn't be of any
consequence structurally. If the ends from your struts
are so rusted they need to be replaced, I'd buy the material to make new
ends and adapt to the struts given you.
New strut end material can be obtained from Aircraft Spruce and several
other outlets.
