I discoverd that landing in 4 foot tall hay field is not good on the ultrastar.
bent the nose and fliped on her back sould be fixed by the end of the week.
I was going to raze the nose 11 inch to make it paralel to flight any coments on this?

Rick, alfalfa is especially grabby. One foot is all you need.
(experienced in that department)

Check the photoshare archives for Ed Steuber's Ultra.

For what it's worth, I got away with a successful forced landing in tall hay
by flaring just above the hay, holding off the landing until she stalled and
flopped down with the tail low. Full back stick at landing, and she didn't go
nose over. Didn't even bend the gear, but from the impact i'm surprised at
that.
If it happens again, I'm seriously going to consider pulling the BRS. I
think a chute replacement might be less costly than repairing damage caused
by flipping over.

Pulling the BRS for an engine failure is a bad idea. There is no guarantee of a good deployment, it can tangle in the prop etc. etc. The BRS is a good last resort, but only if there is no other way to save yourself, there are just to many things that can go very wrong in a BRS deployment. Now instead of maybe bending your airplane you may be looking at hitting the earth very out of control and losing your life Shocked

Hi,

surely this depends on what is underneath you. If there is a chance of even
a rough field landing I would agree but if you are over a pine forest it
might be a better proposition to drop vertically, comparatively slowly, than
to fly almost horizontally at 30 mph into the tree tops.

Tangling the shrouds in a stopped prop? Even worse to tangle them in a
revolving one..

Are chutes compulsory in the US?. I think they are in Germany but few people
in the UK fit them, mainly because of the weight.

Yep. Chutes are compulsory for ultralights in Germany. Few years ago
they raised the MTOW from 450 to 472,5 kg to compensate for the
weight of the chute.

(Makes you wonder if they'll ever compensate for the weight of the
average German.)
