First of all let me say that after a very stressfull 6 months I am able
to keep the plane. Also all that is left is to get current and will be
back in the air again.
Now for the question to those of you with bungee gears still. How many
wraps are you running? I am running the recomended number but it sags
just a little and is very bouncy on landing.

Al, what is your tire pressure? Which tires are you using?
I've got the Carlisle ATV knobbies, at about 3-4 PSI. No bounce at all (at
least not the plane's fault <g>), and I've been told that my bungees are too
loose. I disagree, but since I didn't put them on, that may be true.
I don't sag at all statically, but my toe-in pulls them out a little when I
push back into parking. I have to lift the right wheel and move it in, so it
doesn't sit that way overnight.
BTW, I've got 5 wraps.

I have the same problem. I am thinking of making the bungee about one turn longer. I often land on very rough fields and like to have the bungee absorb the shock rather than transmitting the load to the frame. If you try this before I do please post your results.

I have consulted a number of colleagues regarding Michel's sagging
condition, and the consensus of opinion is, that the condition, usually
found in males, relates specifically to his corpus avion.
Typically, this condition occurs when insufficient stimulation of this
part occurs, or occurs at irregular intervals, such that it's performance
degrades over time. While mechanical intervention may be indicated in
extreme cases, a simple remedy first to be applied is, to correct the
lack/irregularity of use.
Reference to the literature indicates that, the active and positive
support of one's spouse has a direct and positive effect on outcomes. His
recovery may be immeasurably enhanced by your personally
encouraging/inviting him to more, and regular use of his flight skills.

about these shock cords ,, My series V manual says 8 wraps on the P/N
63003.101 bungee cords , i know for a fact that on mine 7 wraps were not
enough to keep it from sagging and eight worked fine . and 8 wraps were very
difficult to achieve ( at least for me ), good luck with the wrap session

Yes, I did the mistake to forget mentioning that I had a model 3. I
guess the model V is heavier and needs more turns. In any case, the
model 3 is certainly not meant to have more than six because there is
already very little place for six turns and if I had to add a couple,
they would have to be on the top of others, and that is not wise, is
it?
And I agree, it takes two strong men to pull the bungee to a fit around
the bars, one under and one from the inside.

I have a Model IV with 5 wraps instead of 6 and it works fine.
I have the 7/16s Bungees as well. I think they have 3 stripes on them.
My empty weight is under 550 lbs though.

Michel I think the Model ll and lll take the same size bungees which is
60" long and 3/8" dia. If you would like I would be glad to check the
size and color. I read some where that one of the colors that had been
used was bad and no long recommended. I have also read that some
builders have made the sixth wrap when the bungee began to sag.

Hey! I found a way to do it solo that's not too bad. You have to be careful
though.
I first wrapped the bungee as many times as I could and hooked the end over
the lug. (I think I got three or four wraps.) I then, using channel-locks,
(a type of plier with a lot of leverage and a lot of grip area,) and
working from the center wrap to the outside, pulled all of the "slack" to
the last loop. This left the last loop with enough slack to disconnect it
and gain another wrap. Re-connect the end and go through the process again.
I was able to get my full six wraps doing this. You have to be careful that
you don't damage the bungee by crushing or tearing it. I found it wasn't
too much of a problem.

as has been suggested before, the use of large wireties as each loop is pulled as far as it will go allows the carrying of the slack to the end. Others have used a wood wedge jammed between the bungy and the frame carry through.

FWIIW, an excellent tool for pulling the shock cord without damaging it is a
(pliers?) made for pulling spark plug wires off an auto while it is running.
NAPA has them.Mary and I can now install one shock cord on out 4-1200 in

Yes, thank you. The size is quite evident but I am not sure I
understand the idea about the colours. I "googled" a bit about it and
it seems that colour code is used on chock absorbing cords as an
indication of the date of manufacture. What I don't understand is, are
there different strength of bungees, or rather, different stretching
lengths? Because I have the right diameter, the right length as
indicated in the building manual but ... it still sags. Should I get
another type of bungee, in which case, which? Or should I make the
length (now 55") even shorter?

The bungee on my Model II is 3/8 dia. and 60" long. Looking at the gear =
there are 6 wraps showing on the bottom of the gear. Not sure why you =
have the difference in length, I wouldn't make them shorter. The =
different sets I have installed have always went on tight and kept the =
gear in place.

This is what is needed for Coloured Bungees
We refer to it as MIL SPEC
Most aircraft supply houses carry it.
It is 3/8s sizing but you will find it measure about .41

Thank you, Dee and Dave.
I purchased this - now useless - bungee cord at a local ship chandler.
I didn't see why requirements to quality would be different from
aviation to maritime use. Yet it must be because if what I purchased
was 60" long, it would sag way too much. So, aviation bungee cord
stretches much less than their maritime equivalents. It doesn't
necessarily mean that they are stronger but they stretch less. However,
they are both strings of rubber in a nylon sleeve. Could it be that the
aviation one is pre-stretched in some way?
Thanks for the link, Dee. I know that Aircraft Spruce also retails
bungee cords. I might have to purchase from the other side of the big
pond but, as you know, given the shipping cost, the enormous 25% added
value tax in Norway, on both goods and shipping ... it makes me try
first local goods. Yet, if not available, I'll do in the US as I have
done many times before.
