On landing at Sherburn on the hard runway when we slowed to around 35 knots the nose wheel started to bounce up and down rapidly. My buddy Roger was P1 and he held the stick hard back but it continued "bounce" until we slowed to 20 knots. In 100 hours and hundreds of landings this has never occurred.
I have the nose wheel spring mod fitted, not the bungee, any ideas, could it be the shimmy damper needs checking?

Robert
Definitely a shimmy problem but you need to inspect the whole thing based
on my previous experiences! Then ensure the setting is done to the book.

Hi Robert,
Your description nearly fulfils nose wheel shimmy. It is also far and away
the most likely cause. One other obvious possibility, although you would
probably have noticed this, is a flat tyre!
So check N/W tyre pressure and then check shimmy damper adjustment. Please
refer to the manual to do this check using a spring balance. As a quick
check, with the nose wheel off the ground check that there is a fair amount
of resistance to turning the nose wheel fork left and right. There should
be a fair bit of resistance. If not then adjustment is necessary.
Nose wheel shimmy is primarily a problem on hard dry runways. It happens
far less on grass.
If shimmy is the problem get it fixed quickly, much damage can be caused to
the rest of the airframe if you let it persist.

Hi Pete and Bob,
Thanks for your responses, we did think this could be the only problem but it is reassuring that we will not be searching in the wrong direction now following your comments, I have re-read the manual and remember how to test and set up the correct breaking torque. Thank you both for your input.

Hi Robert
I have used the Nyogel grease in my shimmy damper from day one, it allows
The damper to work much easier without an excessive load on the adjusting nut,
Plus it makes steering the aircraft easier without using a lot of differential braking,

I had occasionally the same or similar problem and in my case it was definitely shimmiing. The only situation this happened was when I tried to keep the nose wheel off the ground as log as possible after touch-down. So the nose wheel touches the ground at relative low speed and softly.
I tried to readjust the dampener to an extend that steering during taxiing was pretty hard but it had no effect whatsoever.
I now land the plane as usual on the main gear but immediately after touch-down I lower the nose wheel to put it on the ground. This way I can avoid the shimmiing.
I might try Ivor's suggestion to use Nyogel and try again. Does the dampener be adjusted to the same settings using Nyogel ?

Hi Kees
I used the 767A grease smeared on both sides of the fibre disc, Then adjust as the Europa manual and you will find the spindle nut
doesn't have to be tighten any were near the amount you would without it to get the same friction,
It works very well with much easier steering,
regards
Ivor

Hi Ivor,
Thanks for your information. I will go shopping for 767A and I will let you know about my experiences with it.

I need a little bit too, but it is only available in larger quantities.
Maybe we can share it?
(I used the 767A before, got some from Ivor, it worked perfect, but due
to replacing the oil hoses some oil dripped on the nose gear and washed
it away.)

I am trying to source Nyogel 767A but it is not held in the UK by Newgate Simms they have to import it and it will be in 100ml tubs and will take 3 weeks to come. It costs about £31.00 for this small tub, but that isn't the main problem it's the 3 week wait which then clashes with me being overseas for nearly 3 weeks over the Christmas Holidays, so no flying until the New Year!!
Has anyone a small amount of Nyogel 767A I can purchase to save me the wait?

Nyogel 868H is available from Farnell in the UK. 100cc costs £18.79.
I use a sample of it on my aircraft two weeks ago and it works just fine. I
obtained a sample from Nyogel in the USA which was delivered within 7 days.

Hi All,
After tightening up the castle nut to 18lb we still had a problem so I took your advise and purchased Fluorcarbon Nyogel 868H, stripped out the nose wheel and found a small amount of grease had got on the shimmy plate (Nev Eyre was correct, again!!), cleaned it all down and used the Nyogel, test flew the aircraft and it works a treat!!
I purchased a 10 gram tube (NL1013) from Newgate Simms Ltd, Chester (01244 660771), they were VERY helpful, cost £21.00 including Vat and delivery, a very worthwhile purchase and highly recommended.
