I always hear locally, the guys say to hold the oil down a half or a quart from full cause it will just puke it out anyway ?? What is the concensus here..I am flying to Killeen Texas this weekend to see my son at Fort Hood and was wanting to top up the oil for a longer than normal trip but ??? I usually am a 1/2 to 1 quart down guy from experience with my previous planes I was familiar with back in the 90's.

Consensus .... here? Ya gotta be kidding!!!
For me, I fill to 6 Qts. If I'm worried about a long trip (haven't done
that since an overhaul!) I'll carry a Qt in the baggage compartment.
Of course, if you want to line the pockets of the FBO they'll be glad to
raise the level of your shortfall. Razz

Ok, so far a consensus. 6 Qts for me also and maybe 6.5 if going on a long cross country.

I also fill to 6...but after oil change, I'll add 7 since I put on a new oil filter and also had camguard--always see a little on the belly for a few hours.

Isn`t this more based on how many hours between adding oil? My tiger on a near new overhaul runs 12-15 hours between adding one quart to keep level between 6-7 qt's.

I keep a close watch on oil level and usually add half a quart at a time to keep the level right at the 6 quart mark or slightly above. The frequency of adding oil will vary depending on the amount of oil a particular engine burns per hour. Ours burns about one quart in 9 hours.

IF you let your engine decide how much it needs, it'll tell you. I know that sounds a little touchy-feely and maybe too liberal for some of you who want to control how much oil your plane needs, but, seriously, most planes will like around 6 to 6 1/2 quarts.
When you change your oil, only put in 7 qts. Fly, watch the oil level. It will settle down, i.e., stop using oil, somewhere around 6 to 6 1/2 quarts.
It also depends a lot on how hard you push it. Those who regularly fly at 2400-2500 rpm will usually see a higher stable oil level.

You're saying the same thing. Somewhere between 6 and 6 1/2 qts for most, a little more for the rest.

Ok, so far a consensus. 6 Qts for me also and maybe 6.5 if going on a long cross country.

Razz

Well, speaking from experience, not logic...
I can get 10 tach hours on 6 quarts if I take it easy, less than 75% power. But if I make a single 1 hour flight, 2700 RPM, down low, it'll shoot out a half quart down to 5.5 in that one flight. And that's measuring before the next flight after the oil has had a chance to drain back down. I've repeated this experiment multiple times.

If you run the engine hard, the pressures inside the engine are higher and it pushes more oil out the breather. It will still settle down at somewhere between 5 1/2 qts and 6 1/2 qts.
The engine in my plane likes about 5 1/2 to 6 qts. I usually add at 5 1/2 qts.

I left out for a trip Friday and it still had about 6.4 or so after the last oil change and I ran it at 2550 both ways about 6 hours and re-checked it this morning after cooling overnight and it was 6.1 so I am going to just keep letting it run down and see what it likes. I am very happy and relieved with the consumption for an 1977 engine with 1890 TT and never had a cylinder off and still has compressions in the 75 to 77 range. This is great news for a guy who recently bought used and only has 8 hours in this recently purchased Tiger. !!!!

When I bought my first plane in 1984 I was neurotic about keeping it at 8 qts. After all, each of the planes I rented up to that point was required to be at 8 qts.
Over the next year or so, after cleaning the belly many, many times, a tie-down neighbor suggested I keep it at 7 qts. I noticed right away that it took a lot longer to go from 8 qts to 7 qts than it did to go from 7 qts to 6 1/2 qts. I gradually let it find its own ideal level. In that Cheetah, it was somewhere between 6 and 6 1/2 qts.
My Tiger likes about 6 qts or maybe a little less.
