Guys,
Getting ready for my maiden voyage and am having a problem with charging. My
amp meter shows a negative draw and the volt meter shows 12 volts, as I turn
things on the amp draw goes more negative. All indications are that the
system is not charging, I am running a Kuntzleman Hotbox. Pretty sure all is
wired correct. Any suggestions where to start? Can I check the AC output of
the charging coils? Any chance that the voltage regulator would be the
culprit?
Also on a side note, is anyone monitoring their cooling water temp other
than as CHT? If so where do you have the probe and what are you seeing for
water temp?

You can test the output of your alternator with an AC voltmeter. Output should be well over 16V at cruise RPM. Generally there are two things that can go wrong with an alternator.
One is the brushes wear out. If this happens you will observe a short period of time where the system charges, doesn’t charge, charges etc. In other words charges intermittently.

Another thing that can generally go wrong with the alternator is the field coil can burn open. No field produced by the field coil no output from the alternator. Related to this is bushings on the alternator can wear enough to allow the field coil to short against the interior of the housing.... Same effect as above. Note the Rotax 582 engines don’t have a field coil. They have a dirt big magnet instead so they use a system of shunting excess power to ground. This means if your stator coils ring out true the problem is probably in your regulator/rectifier.

This is where I have noticed most of the problems come from. The rectifier regulator generally requires a good ground through the back of its case. First thing to do is remove the rectifier/regulator, clean its back and the space it will occupy on the firewall and reinstall it. The next thing to do is to locate the braid that goes from the engine to the frame of the plane. Make sure the connections on both ends of this braid are shiny clean too.

There is a small chance that your rectifier/regulator has gone on strike. You can get it checked out at any automotive shop that specializes in starter motors, etc.

Thanks for the replies, I have been retracing wiring and checking ground continuity since the weather here has kept me from getting the plane out of the hanger and starting it. Some of the wiring I did and some was from the original build and during my reviewing / testing I noticed that the red lead from the Kuntzelman hotbox that goes to the (R,+B,C) terminals on the Regulator also had a tap that went to a breaker on the instrument panel that feeds all the other breakers, not sure if I did this or if it was like that from the original build, either way I endorsed it because it is still there. Not sure if this would cause the regulator to fry, even if not I’m not sure I like the arrangement since all the DC power to the panel would not be filtered through the hotbox. Weather is supposed to get a little more tolerable here next week, I think I will take you advise and see if there is a place that can test the regulator / rectifier for me before I continue with starting the engine and testing for the AC.

Lloyd,
I went through what you are going through 3 years ago. After a couple weeks of trying to troubleshoot the problem,I broke down and bought a new reg/rectifier. 
I mounted it in an aluminum heatsink, jumped in my plane and went flying. No more problems.

Pete,
That thought has always been in the back of my head and I have been researching where I can get a replacement regulator rectifier in case it comes to that, I have seen postings by some 912 owners who have not had great luck with the Ducati regulator rectifiers and have suggested the use of a John Deere  AM101406, any thoughts on alternatives to the Ducati? Used a Keywest on my Model 4 that was running a Rotax 503, ever hear of anyone using one on a 912?

LLoyd,

I followed your same path 3 years ago.  I could not find enough information on Ducati, John Deere, or any other regulator.  Just bite the bullet and get the one from Rotax.  I would love to see a reasonable alternative, but would rather just fly my Kitfox.

That thought has always been in the back of my head and I have been researching where I can get a replacement regulator rectifier in case it comes to that, I have seen postings by some 912 owners who have not had great luck with the Ducati regulator rectifiers and have suggested the use of a John Deere  AM101406, any thoughts on alternatives to the Ducati? Used a Keywest on my Model 4 that was running a Rotax 503, ever hear of anyone using one on a 912?

I went through what you are going through 3 years ago. After a couple weeks of trying to troubleshoot the problem,I broke down and bought a new reg/rectifier. 

I mounted it in an aluminum heatsink, jumped in my plane and went flying.  No more problems.

You can test the output of your alternator with an AC voltmeter.  Output should be well over 16V at cruise RPM.  Generally there are two things that can go wrong with an alternator. 
One is the brushes wear out.  If this happens you will observe a short period of time where the system charges, doesn’t charge, charges etc.  In other words charges intermittently.
 
Another thing that can generally go wrong with the alternator is the field coil can burn open.  No field produced by the field coil no output from the alternator.  Related to this is bushings on the alternator can wear enough to allow the field coil to short against the interior of the housing....  Same effect as above.  Note the Rotax 582 engines don’t have a field coil.  They have a dirt big magnet instead so they use a system of shunting excess power to ground.  This means if your stator coils ring out true the problem is probably in your regulator/rectifier.
 
This is where I have noticed most of the problems come from.  The rectifier regulator generally requires a good ground through the back of its case.  First thing to do is remove the rectifier/regulator, clean its back and the space it will occupy on the firewall and reinstall it.  The next thing to do is to locate the braid that goes from the engine to the frame of the plane.  Make sure the connections  on both ends of this braid are shiny clean too.
 
There is a small chance that your rectifier/regulator has gone on strike.  You can get it checked out at any automotive shop that specializes in starter motors, etc.

Guys,
Getting ready for my maiden voyage and am having a problem with charging. My
amp meter shows a negative draw and the volt meter shows 12 volts, as I turn
things on the amp draw goes more negative. All indications are that the
system is not charging, I am running a Kuntzleman Hotbox. Pretty sure all is
wired correct. Any suggestions where to start? Can I check the AC output of
the charging coils? Any chance that the voltage regulator would be the
culprit?
Also on a side note, is anyone monitoring their cooling water temp other
than as CHT? If so where do you have the probe and what are you seeing for
water temp?
