Wow...what a history!  My CFI got the Wright Bros. Master PIlot award this summer--he and his wife were involved with some of the 1st Grummans built in CLE, OH.  Amazing that this gentleman has 30,000 hours PIC in Grummans--amazing!  Does the AYA have a Hall of Fame???

Going out to the airport today to be with my instructor, he is receiving, from the FAA, the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for 50 years of safe piloting. He was in the Air Force from the mid 50 through mid 70's and consistantly owned grumman airplanes since the original 1969 Yankee that he flew back and fourth from Spokane Wa. to Bedford In. during leave time. When he retired he was an FBO at his home airport aa well as the Madison airport which he flew between and also become a Grumman dealer during this time, through the end of the production in 1979. He has consistantly flown and taught in these wonderful airplanes from their inseption straight through today and even used them to fly charted small automotive freight packages for many years. I seriously doubt if any pilot has more Grumman hours. I know he has in excess of 30,000 PIC but will ask if he knows how many in type. I want to thank him for teaching me in a AA5A in 1994 and being a friend ever since.

Please give a hand for Ralph Rodgers in Madison Indiana on this special day.

Ralph Rodgers, Wright Brothers master pilot Award today...........

To be completely accurate after hearing in the presentation he had 5600 military and 24200 civilian pic hours to date and the large majority of these in AA series grummans. Ralph flew the OV10, the KC135, T37  and others in the service. When asked of his favorite war story, he told of flying up over the polar ice cap to refuel spy planes during the cold war, 2000 miles each way trips leaving Anchorage so heavy they could only climb 300'/min. backing the flaps off just a tiny bit every few minutes and only up to 20k' on the way up and coming home light on less than 1/4 the fuel at 40k feet. I think I heard him say that they would leave with 180,000lbs. ??  of fuel, use half getting to the destination, give half of remaining to the spy plane and only having that remaining 1/4 to come home. I think he is a real true American hero and so humble you have to work to get him to tell of the things he done, 205 missions !!!   Soloed for his original private pilot license on ski's in Anchorage Alaska.  Neat guy, and I am proud to be his friend.  Doug Doty...
