Hi, am I correct in thinking that an HTD belt tracks up hill? That is
if the belt is tracking hard forward, to get it to track back would
require the top pulley to be tilted down at the front? John A

Hey John,
I don't have a belt drive, but most other belts track
to the low side. The only belts I know of that do the
opposite are those belts that push rather than run on
tension, or some that run on a crowned pulley
(slightly higher in the middle) which can make it
different too. If someone has a belt drive and knows
better, jump in here.
Your's is a cog belt, correct? If yours is pulling to
the front, I think you need to tilt it back. Try it a
little at a time and see what happens. Very small
adjustments mean a lot.
Tracking hard forward? To reduce wear while fixing
this you could pull the plugs, hook up a battery
charger, and drive it with the starter to aid in
adjusting. That should get you close. The lower load
should help a lot, but let the starter cool between
operations. If I am wrong and you need to go the
other way, this will keep you from hurting it more.
Self protection here.
Once tracking well, run it under power where you get
the most load and see how it works. I think the hard
tension will flex the mounts a little compared to just
the starter, so it will drift a bit. But once close
with the starter, running will let you fine track it
without excessive wear.
My best guess until someone with better experience
comes along. Any snowmobile drivers here? Belt
driven motorcycles?
