I have an acquaintance that has a experimental project he wants to sell me. It had, at one time, a N number and a application for an airworthiness certificate. The project was de-registered and I don't think an actual certificate was ever issued.

To get a certificate will I have to provide all build logs, receipts, etc. (not available) and is this something I should steer clear of?

If there s no record of it, or if you have an SN number that has never been seen before, I don't see where you have a problem. As a builder you can do whatever you want; name wise, SN wise, all sorts of wises. Smile

find out why the paperwork was never completed,,, if the faa has red flagged
something,, it may come back to be a bigger problem than you want.
i would have to go back and see, but i think when you certify a plane as
home built experimental, you have to declare that no part of the plane had
been certified/registered before. so before you jump into the project,
make sure of the wording and make sure you are comfortable with what you
have to sign your name to.

now on the other hand, if he had only reserved a tail number, but never
completed the paperwork, then there may not be a problem,,, as far as the
builder logs,,, have the pervious owner sign a document explaining what
happened to the builders log or why he did not have one to give you when you
bought the project. and that the construction of the plane did meet the
requirements. ask him if he has construction photos or any thing he could
provide that may help. check on the internet and see if you can find out
the status of the n number. you may have to call the faa for more details.
because if it never went through it may not have been posted. if you call
the faa,,, you may be told there is no problems... or worse case you may
make it harder for him to sell it to anyone else,, the call may raise a red
flag and put the faa on alert for the project.

good luck

My acquaintance is the second owner of the project and in doing a search of the N number, it indicates that it was de-registered.
