Hi all,

recently I received the CM where I found an article about possible failure of the wing spar sockets on Europas. It was mentioned by the author, that “the last thing to be done is to push in the main wing pin half way (as per the Europa manual) and then release the left wing – same applies for the right wing”.

As my Europa lives in a closed trailer at home and I transport it to the aerodrome whenever I want to fly this item is of great interest for me.

Question: what is the correct method for rigging? I cannot see anything wrong in going with the manual and what is the alternative? When I push in the main wing pin completely, it’s impossible to fully slide the starboard wing in. In that case I first have to pull the pin out a little.

I also cannot imagine it as a good idea to rely on the pip pin outside alone to take the whole loads/shocks when sliding the port wing in, especially when the port wing is not fitted totally in line with everything (which is always the case as you know) and contacts e. g. the edges of the spar socket of the port wing. I don’t know about you but I always have to surge push and pull forward and back up and down a little especially the last few inches and I have a better feeling when as much as possible is already fixed “on the other side of the aircraft”.

Those questions becoming even more important since I bought myself a rigging aid for single hand rigging.

Any advice most welcome.

Roland

Hi Roland,
I have just re read the article in the Europa Flyer and I think you may be miss understanding what is written.  You read “the very last thing to be done is to push in the main wing pin half way”.   In fact what it actually said is “the very least that should be done is to insert the main wing pins half way”.
In case this leaves any doubt just follow what the Operators Handbook says.
I hope this clears up any misinterpretation.

Regards
Pete Jeffers

I also rig the airplane for every flight. I have the socket entirely
potted in, with a few layers of bid soaked in araldite over it, after it
came loose before I even reached flying stage. Never had any problems
since. I always push the pins halfway in before rigging the starboard wing.

Hi Roland. What type of rigging aid did you purchase? I am thinking of going the solo rigging route, any other's out there with ideas on the best way to do this?
Martin.

Hi there and thanks for your replies. So my understanding is, that there are no concerns about following the manual ("inserting the main wing pins about 1.....").

(at) Pete: in fact that was what I (miss)understood - time to book some English-lessons.

(at)Frans: good idea to focus on that special item during the built. When I have to fix that one day after several rigging, I'll get in contact to you later on for some advice.

(at)Martin: I have my rigging aid from Christoph Jütte from Austria (0043263925196/c.juette(at)diamond-air.at) who is well known in the sailing community for many years. Good service, price and quality in my opinion, plus it's a lightweight as it's completely Aluminium. But it's no real company (like Cobra for instance), just a "one man show". If you need any further details, you can also contact me off-list.

Regards
Roland
