Once again, my apologies for my lack of knowledge on this subject as I was out of the country for much of last year. I am trying to bring myself up to date as to the requirements for Mode S. My first question is do I really need to have it in the UK for VFR flights? What about flying on the continent? There is much info on the web but it looks like there are a lot of exceptions to the rules for VFR flights in our airplanes.
I currently have a Microair with mode C. If I need to upgrade it looks like the Trig TT21 will fit in the same space. What experience have others had with this unit?

Richard,
In Germany we obliged to switch on our Mode S :
Over 5000 ft
In a TMZ
In a CTR
Otherwise no transponder necessary.
In Holland I believe it is compulsory above 1200 ft but must be switched off under the Amsterdam TMA. So you have to have it but cannot use it!
No Idea for the rest of Europe.

I have the Trig unit. I blew it up when I installed it!! Completely my fault I sent it back and they fixed it straight away at no cost even though they knew it was because I am an idiot.
I was concerned that it would be harder to set with 1 knob rather than 4. I have found it much easier and just 1 button to go back to 7000.
My squawk is always seen.
What more could you ask for?

I also have a trig TT21 also and it installed without fuss it is easy to use and the VFR button to go back to 7000 ,or whatever you have as a default, is very helpful.
it works and I think it works well, what more can you say. It can work with extended squitter so will not go out of date too soon.

Hi Richard
I have a Trig 21. Very straightforward to install and use.
The only criticism I have is that it doesn't remember the
alternative (non-7000) squawk after it has been turned off.
It also has the encoding altimeter inside it so a separate
one is not required (allowing sale of the old Mode C
transponder AND its encoding altimeter - on eBay in the
USA !!!!!)
Ideally as my airfield is in the Stansted TMZ I would have
0013 stored/saved in there, but I have to put it in as the
"flip-to" code each time I start up.

I have a Becker.
A very solid engineered pain in the arse to use.
Not intuitive and I have to get the handbook out every time I need to set a code.

We bought F-PMLH equipped with GARMIN GTX327 and Alticodeur ACK30, which
means mode C (very efficient and easy to use).
Mode S is not (yet?) requested in France. Most are still equipped with mode
A or Mode C.

I have a Trig TT21, in addition from my EFIS I send NMEA information to my TT21 which has all my GPS information.
So when I fly those folk who use Foreflight or similar on their smartphones now track me asking me what am I doing by not being at work. Works like flight following.
I leave the TT21 in ALT all the time as I am able via my MGL equipment to use the TT21's squat switch and it changes from GND to ALT and back automatically in Mode S format.
Our standard code in New Zealand is 1200, works like a dream with our SSR.
Cheers Peter

I have the TT 21 and am very satisfied with it. I also find operation very straightforward.
I can recommend it.

Hi Richard,
Update for Mode S in France:
Based on a presentation by the DGAC made in September 2010, Mode S for VFR will be required in designated airspace from March 2014. See attached document (in french only, sorry!)
