Does anyone know of a repair, as in seals or modifications, to stop oil dripping from my sump drain valve?

What is the process for stopping leaks around the bolt head and nut of the rockers? I have in the past, pushed the bolt out with something close to the same size as the bolt, to replace crush washers. Is there a simple solution?

Phil,
Remove the sump drain valve during your next oil change and chip
detector screen check. Disassemble the sump drain valve and hand polish
the rotating portion of valve and the seat with 320-400 grit wet/dry
sandpaper. Then coat the rotating section with "fuel lube". It can be
purchased from Aircraft Spruce.

is a paste like material that is unaffected by fuel and oil. THEN
purchase a rubber cork from your local hardware store and plug the
opening in the valve.

The only solution that I know of for the leaks around the rocker arm
bolts is replacing the crush washers. Do check how tight the
castellated nuts are though. If they are loose, you can re tighten them
and see if that helps stop the leaks. Otherwise you'll just have to
replace the crush washers.

Some commercial Hydraulic companies sell what is called a “Dowty washer” it’s a washer with a rubber seal moulded on to it and ranges from ¼” right up to 2”. Its commonly used where a limited amount of torque is permissible on the fitting you are fastening. Here is a link…

Doug Sapp and George Coy can supply the crush washers. There is a trick there though. There is one washer that sits in the recess of the rocker box that is the same thickness as the crush washer under the nut head of the rocker axle (bolt) and the conciliated nut. It is roughly half the diameter of the outer crush washer. Both have to be replaced to stop the leak. The Dowty Washer will work for a while but you are not repairing the worn inner washer that is allowing some wobble of the rocker arm itself leading to the pesky leak. It takes two of each size washer. The inner washer is pressed lightly in so you will have to drive it out gently. It is easy to remove.
I have a rocker arm bolt I am going to have to replace due to the worn inner washer on the engine I am rebuilding.
As Dennis says, polishing the stop cock on the sump drain will help. Have seen him do it a number of times with great results. Need to do it on my 52 but time is the rate critical step at this time. I can live with it for now.
Sorry don’t have my parts manual near so can’t give you the parts numbers for the two washers as they pertain to the M-14.

Phil, We carry the rocker washers in stock.  Ours are .003 thicker than stock which adds a little bit more material to help out with a persistent leak.
Great care should be taken to make 100% sure that all of the needle bearings are in fact present and accounted for.  I have seen several engines with missing roller bearings which will in time result in abnormal wear and render the cylinder unserviceable.   


For those of you who have pushed out the bolt only to hear the sound of scattering bearings there are 56 of the little rascals in each bearing point.

To be sure of NOT hearing the tinkles of bearings. Get a bolt or rod of the same diameter as the
rocker bolt and and cut it to slightly shorter than the rocker arm, chamfer the ends. As you with
draw the rocker bolt insert the tool this will keep the little (x#% *&(&^) bearings in place as you
remove the rocker arm.
