|

Hello,
the air box on my classic has been modified by the builders to have the option for carb heating.
So it became bigger and heavier.
Unfortunately it never worked.
I want to undo the modification and have a question about the original design.
In my modified air box is a support laminated in, which is connected to the engine mount.
Is that necessary? Is there a support at all in the factory deign or do only the carbs carry the air box as I am expecting?
Thank you
Juergen

Hi Juergen,
The airbox would have / should have been supported by an Alloy strut [ 25mm x 3mm ] bolted through the rear face of the airbox, to a rubber cushioned P clip on the Engine frame.
Mounting on the carbs only is not enough.
Cheers,
Nev.

On my classic the airbox has two knobs on the bottom that rest on the engine
mounts. Blobs of silicone sealant have been put on the engine mounts to
make a soft seat for the knobs. I have a warm air device which is two flaps
at right angles to each other which alternatively close off the NACA duct or
close off a hole of similar size in the front of the moulding on the cowling
that seals off the airbox. The default position is cold air and to get warm
air you rotate the two flaps against a spring with a car choke cable to
allow warm air off the top of the engine to enter the moulding above the
airbox and simultaneously close off the NACA duct. Works beautifully.

Hi Frank and Nev,
thank you for the reply.
I now have mounted the the water heated carb flange.
That puts the carbs nearer to the firewall and the laminated extra air paper filter on the back of the air box dos not fit anymore.
I now will reinstall the support because the air box is rather heavy but I think that this is no intelligent design, generating more vibration on the carbs and causing them to wear earlier.
The original air box by Rotax is a very light alloy tube.
