Has anyone been able to decipher the new rules regarding pilots licensing in the UK?  I have read several articles and been on the CAA web site but still cannot work out if I need to do anything about this to continue to fly.  



At present I hold a UK PPL and a JAA class 2 medical.

Richard,



If you only fly your Europa and you are happy with this situation, do

nothing.



If you want to fly EASA certified aircraft, get yourself an EASA licence.

It is rather confusing, Brians advice is sound. The CAA have recently released a new 28 page document that is easier to follow, it has dates, deadlines etc.



I'm in a similar position to you in that I have the old UK lifetime CAA licence and I fly an Annex II aircraft (Airtourer). I don't need a new EASA licence to fly my aircraft, but in future I may need to fly an EASA aircraft for training or a renewal/biannual check etc. 



I've decided to stump up and get a new EASA licence as it's a paperwork exercise for me (apply send cheque to CAA etc) I can also prove the radio navigation needed for the issue of the EASA licence.



As I understand it our CAA are happy for the holder of a valid EASA PPL to fly non EASA aircraft ie Annex II aircraft as well as EASA aircraft. The future 'downgrade' if you like would be to get an EASA LAPL which is also acceptable to our CAA for flying EASA and Annex II aircraft but requires a less stringent medical.

Thanks for the answers guys. About half an hour after posting my question, I got my copies of Flyer & Pilot through the post, both of which had a copy of the new pilot licensing regulations enclosed. I will study these also.

I am in the same boat though my license folder mentions JAR I think its a UK PPL(A). I read the glossy brochure but it seemed to miss the vital information. I have also been keeping my IMC valid so that I wont miss grandfather rights but I am non the wiser on that either. Whats the mention of radio navigation and how much is it to get the new license?



I guess it means I can go hire a plane in spain, but then I could before!

If I have understood an instructor friend correctly, the EASA LAPL  is for life, with less stringent medical requirements and there is no biennial flight review. Just 12 hours in your logbook within the preceding X?12?13? months. A bit like things used to be before the ghastly JAA stuck its oar in.
