Hi,
I have a 1978 Grumman Tiger, Ser. #0787. I have a LoPresti cowl and need a landing light lens cover. Can anyone tell where I can get one? LoPresti sent me a square pc. of plexiglass for lots of bucks that was "contoured" and that was it...not cut to size or any holes drilled.......appreciate any help!
Thanks,
Carol

Ours cracked as well with very low hours. Have heard from others that this a common problem. Seems like the origional was poorly machined and finished. The rough edges allow the lens to crack leaving the customer with the bill and down time to fix the problem. They really should step up & do the right thing and take care of the customers who purchased their expensive product.

Hi Carol,
Best I can do is sell you and Jaguar Cowling. Just a pet peeve of mine, but, LoPresti never made a cowling for AA5x planes. They made a nose bowl.
Gary
PS, the Jaguar cowling uses the same landing light lens as any AA5x

I have a 1974 traveler. I have been wanting to do an upgrade to the cowling and nose bowl bc the 74 cowling is a pretty dirty design an leaves a lot to be desired. Does anyone know if the jaguar cowling will fit the pre-upgraded '74 traveler? I know the lop presiti cowling only works for the post cleanup cowling.
Thanks,
Matt

YUP!That is what you get...
Aren't you lucky!
Since they did not say it, I will: Make it fit.
Start with a piece of cardboard and cut and trim until you get it to fit correctly.
Then punch the mounting holes in the cardboard.
Then orient the plastic for the proper curve.
Use a China Marker or Sharpie to mark the outside diameter and holes.
Cut and drill to size.
Install in a professional manor.
You are done.
And the plane is lighter.

Hi Matt,
The Jaguar cowling will fit. The issue is the carb intake. If we had dual exhausts it would be a piece-'o-cake. Adding an inlet to the front causes way too much drag. I have a prototype for a Cheetah/Traveler that I think will work. I just need money and time to finish the project.

Does using a buffing wheel to polish-up the edges after cutting to reduce stress-risers make any difference in longevity?

Absolutely. As with any plastic on an airplane smooth edges will help reduce cracking.

Great news! I received the following email from Lo Presti's........
Carol,
Looks like our lens guy here had a problem with a lens fit up on a Piper Arrow customer that had to have his lens undrilled and untrimmed for some reason. Those instructions were interpreted to be “all lens” not just that one lens for that one customer.
Our shop manager is currently walking your new lens through our QA department so we can ship in the morning and also fixing this situation for all of our other lens customers too.
Sorry for the screw up and I will have my shipping department send you a free bottle of our SpeedCoat for your plane too.
Woohoo.....isn't this great???? I don't have it yet, but it looks like the situation is on a great path! I want to thank RJ for jumping on this so quick and getting results!

Are they going to do anything for the rest of us with cracked lenses? This should not be a common problem.

Carol,
Looks like our lens guy here had a problem with a lens fit up on a Piper
Arrow customer that had to have his lens undrilled and untrimmed for some
reason. Those instructions were interpreted to be “all lens” not just
that one lens for that one customer.
Our shop manager is currently walking your new lens through our QA
department so we can ship in the morning and also fixing this situation for
all of our other lens customers too.
Sorry for the screw up and I will have my shipping department send you a
free bottle of our SpeedCoat for your plane too.
Woohoo.....isn't this great???? I don't have it yet, but it looks like the
situation is on a great path! I want to thank RJ for jumping on this so
quick and getting results!

Have not heard anything on the landing light lens issue. Were you going to take care of us?

I posted ...maybe I didn't do it right. They are going to make the landing light lens. It was an error where a lens didn't fit a Piper and the Piper owner wanted the sq. sheet to make the lens cover. Lo Presti stated it was a mistake and I should be getting a lens cut to size and also some free Speed Coat due to the error. They responded that Monday--I don't have the lens cover yet but it should have shipped yesterday.
Thanks,
Carol

That is great for you Carol. I was following up to see if lopresti was going to take care of the rest of us who have defective landing light covers like you had. Cracked lenses on lopresti nose bowls are unfortunately not uncommon. I've seen hundreds of the factory lenses and very few if any are cracked. Many are hazy and checkered from many years of use, but few if any are cracked from improper finishing. A landing light lens should last for many years and hundreds if not thousands of hours. They should not fail in a couple of years or a few hundred hours.
I'm asking and I think quite fairly, that lopresti provide a new lens cover to replace the defective one that was provided with our cowl. A customer should not have to spend more money on such a new product, if it was made properly the first time.
So I was asking what lopresti's intentions were in regards to replacing the defective lenses.
Glad they too care of you, now how about the rest of us?
