I have an Oil pressure gauge that came with the project I purchased. I've been flying with it for just a few hours and yesterday after start up, the gauge wouldn't rise above 20psi. The gauge has a picture of Van's Plane (at) the bottom. I seem to remember hearing about these not being very reliable. Does this sound familiar to anyone? After checking under the cowl, then idling for a while and monitoring the CHT & Oil temps, I took a couple of circuits around the pattern.....all was normal except for the lack of Oil pressure at it's usual reading. I plan on pulling the pressure line from the engine to the sending unit to verify that it is not clogged, and already checked the signal line to the gauge. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I have all the Van's gauges in my panel with the exception of voltage & manifold pressure and never had an issue in 100 plus hours.
Check all your connections...good grounds are a must...to make sure they are clean and tight. If everything looks flight ready then I would start by checking the sending unit to make sure it's functioning properly.

I had to replace the sender unit on my RV after a couple hundred hours. I plumbed a mechanical gauge to a plug on the block where the sender units are. If you can find a buddy you could try your gauge in his plane. If its not the gauge, its the sender unit. Another way would be to find out the resistance that should make it go to some upscale reading and substitute that for the sender unit. Next time I have my cowl off, I could tell you what that resistance is, but surely someone on the list can tell you sooner.

I had the same problem with Van oil pressure gauge, except mine would be ok at startup and after 15 or 20 minutes it would show 25 to 30 psi.
I replaced the sending unit twice. Luckily I also installed an idiot light with pressure sender for the light at 45 psi. The light never came on. I installed the idiot light so I wouldn’t forget to turn the master off at shutdown.
I ended up replacing the gauge with a Electronic International oil pressure and oil temp combination gauge. After replacement oil pressure stayed at 70 psi and never wavered.

Some data points that may help:
For a working Vans Oil Pressure gauge....
The transducer should measure about 240 ohms at atmospheric pressure (zero) - mine measured 238 ohms.
I tested the gauge with fixed value resistors,
152 ohms gave 23 psi,
98ohms gave 51psi,
60 ohms gave 81 psi and
41ohms gave 95psi.
So armed with a multimeter you should be able to track down where you have a problem. A poor contact in the circuit will increase the resistance indicating a lower pressure, but any number of Faults could give the indication.
I recommend you do not fly without resolving the issue.

Doug,
I installed a new sending unit from ACS this evening and fired up the O-320-160........same, same. I checked the connections under the dash in the cowl; found a loose connection. So I put a new connector on the end and tightened it down.. no joy. I have this meter pictured, but am a novice and not sure how to set it up to check the values on the gauge. Is this something that a shop can check is I take it in to them? I also have an ACK-30 encoder that doesn't want to transmit the altitude. Would that have to be checked in the plane, or can it be bench checked? Thanks.

Yes a shop could sort this out for you, just apply cash.
The multimeter looks to be just the ticket. I see it is already set on the ohms scale, so here is a plan....
1. Disconnect the transducer, check the resistance between the terminal and the transducer body - this should be close to the 240 ohms. If not then you do not have the correct transducer. I notice you purchased the transducer from ACS, but the gauge is from Vans. With this type of gauge the transducer has to have the resistance profile with pressure to match the gauge. I believe Vans sells the correct transducer, I am uncertain if this matches anything from ACS.
2. Now reconnect the transducer and disconnect the Sense terminal and the ground from the gauge. The sense wire should go directly to the transducer terminal, and the ground should connect to the case of the transducer (probably via the airframe ground) c- measure the resistance between the two free ends - this should measure the same as for the transducer alone - about 240 ohms. If not then there is a wiring issue between the transducer and the sense terminal or to ground. Fix this if it not correct.
If necessary run a new wire between the gauge and the transducer terminal, and run a new ground wire between the case of the transducer to the gauge ground. Retest for the 240 ohms.
3. Check the airframe ground connection (this is the negative of the battery, or the engine case) to the transducer case. The should be less than 0.1 ohm. If not find out why and fix.
4. Finally check the gauge itself - get hold of a 100ohm resistor - wire it between the gauge sense terminal and the gauge ground. Gauge supply terminal should already be wired to the supply - this should be 12-14 volts relative to the ground. Gauge ground wired to ground. With the 100ohm resistor in place and power applied the gauge should indicate close to 50psi. If it does your gauge should be ok.
Much easier to do than to describe.

I have an Oil pressure gauge that came with the project I purchased. I've been flying with it for just a few hours and yesterday after start up, the gauge wouldn't rise above 20psi. The gauge has a picture of Van's Plane (at) the bottom. I seem to remember hearing about these not being very reliable. Does this sound familiar to anyone? After checking under the cowl, then idling for a while and monitoring the CHT & Oil temps, I took a couple of circuits around the pattern.....all was normal except for the lack of Oil pressure at it's usual reading. I plan on pulling the pressure line from the engine to the sending unit to verify that it is not clogged, and already checked the signal line to the gauge. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Or maybe one could use a "real" oil pressure gauge with an oil line
coming to it. The downside would be the possibility of leaks inside the
cabin area.
